King Pin Beam, 6 Wider, for Coil Over Shocks
* 6 inches wider for increased stability.
* Designed for use with coil-over shocks.
* Overall width of 39.5 inches.
OVERVIEW
When you are pushing your off-road machine to the limit across the dunes or through technical desert terrain, stability is the name of the game. This Latest Rage King Pin Beam is engineered specifically for the hardcore enthusiast looking to radically improve their front-end geometry. By extending the width of the beam by a full 6 inches over the stock Volkswagen configuration, you are effectively widening your track, which lowers the center of gravity and significantly reduces the risk of tipping during high-speed cornering. This beam is designed to ditch the restrictive traditional torsion leaf setup in favor of high-performance coil-over shocks. This transition allows for a much more tunable suspension, giving you the ability to dial in spring rates and dampening to match your specific vehicle weight and driving style, ensuring that your front tires stay glued to the dirt no matter how rough the trail gets.
At Appletree Automotive, we understand that durability is just as important as performance. This 6-inch wider king pin beam is constructed from heavy-duty tubular steel with precision welds that are built to withstand the brutal vertical loads and lateral stresses of off-road racing. Measuring 39.5 inches in total width, this beam provides the clearance necessary for long-travel trailing arms and larger tire combinations that would otherwise rub on a narrower setup. Because it is designed for coil-over applications, it eliminates the need for internal torsion stacks, reducing unsprung weight and simplifying your front-end maintenance. Whether you are building a dedicated sand rail, a rugged tube-chassis buggy, or a radical Baja Bug, this beam provides the professional-grade foundation required for a truly competitive suspension system.
FITMENT
This king pin beam is designed for custom off-road applications and classic Volkswagen front-end geometries. Please note that widening the beam requires corresponding changes to your steering linkage and trailing arms.
- VW Beetle (Standard): 1946 through 1965 (King Pin Models)
- VW Karmann Ghia: 1956 through 1965 (King Pin Models)
- Dune Buggies: All Manx-style and fiberglass bodies using a King Pin donor chassis
- Sand Rails: Custom tube chassis designed for King Pin / Link Pin front ends
- Baja Bugs: Ideal for wide-track desert racing conversions

PRO TIPS
1. Account for Your Steering Geometry
When you install a beam that is 6 inches wider than stock, your factory tie rods will no longer reach the spindles. You MUST purchase or fabricate longer tie rods to compensate for the additional 3 inches of width on each side. Failure to use properly sized steering linkages will result in severe toe-in issues or an inability to connect your steering box to your spindles. We recommend using heavy-duty chromoly tie rods with high-quality rod ends to match the increased leverage and stress that a wider track puts on the steering system.
2. Selecting the Right Coil-Over Spring Rate
Since this beam eliminates the use of torsion leaves, your coil-over shocks are carrying 100% of the vehicle''s front-end weight. It is critical to calculate your "sprung weight" before ordering shocks. If your spring rate is too light, you will bottom out constantly, risking damage to the beam and the chassis. If it is too stiff, the front end will be "skittish" and lose traction. For most lightweight sand rails, a dual-rate spring setup works best to provide a plush ride over small bumps while offering a firm ramp-up for big landings.
3. Proper Maintenance of King Pin Bushings
Because these beams are frequently used in sandy and dusty environments, the bushings and king pins are prone to accelerated wear if not properly maintained. Before installation, ensure the internal bores of the beam are perfectly clean and free of any welding slag or debris. We highly recommend using a high-pressure waterproof grease and greasing the zerks after every major outing. If you notice any "slop" or play in the front wheels when the vehicle is jacked up, check your bushings immediately; keeping these tight is the key to maintaining high-speed stability and preventing "death wobble" in the dirt.
