OVERVIEW
When you are restoring or maintaining an Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) Volkswagen, the hardware is often the most overlooked yet critical component of the entire assembly. This EMPI IRS pivot bolt is engineered to provide a rock-solid connection between your trailing arm and the chassis pivot bracket, ensuring that your rear suspension geometry remains precise and secure under all driving conditions. Over decades of service, original factory hardware is prone to extreme corrosion, thread fatigue, and physical deformation caused by road salt, moisture, and the sheer mechanical stress of the rear suspension. Upgrading to this high-quality replacement ensures that your trailing arms are pivoting on a smooth, reliable axis, which is absolutely essential for maintaining proper wheel alignment and predictable handling characteristics during aggressive cornering or heavy acceleration.
One of the standout features of this specific replacement pivot bolt is its modern 17mm Allen head design. Traditional bolts in this high-torque location can be notoriously difficult to remove after years of becoming seized to the chassis, often leading to rounded-off hex heads and a significant headache for the mechanic. By utilizing a deep, 17mm internal hex drive, this bolt allows for a much more secure tool engagement, drastically reducing the risk of slipping while applying the high torque values necessary for a safe and permanent installation. Whether you are building a high-performance street-legal sleeper, a concours-level weekend show car, or a rugged off-road Baja Bug, using fresh, reliable hardware like this pivot bolt is a non-negotiable step in ensuring your air-cooled VW remains safe, quiet, and roadworthy for another fifty years. Don''t risk your safety on forty-year-old hardware when a robust, precision-engineered solution is readily available.

PRO TIPS
1. Prevent Future Seizing with Anti-Seize
Because these bolts are located in a high-exposure area under the vehicle, they are frequently subjected to water, mud, and road grime. Before sliding the bolt through the trailing arm bushing and into the pivot bracket, we highly recommend applying a generous coating of high-quality nickel or copper anti-seize to the non-threaded shank of the bolt. This prevents the bolt from chemically welding itself to the inner metal sleeve of the trailing arm bushing over time. However, be careful to keep the threads clean or use a thread locker if specified by your shop manual, as you don''t want the vibration of the road to loosen the hardware.
2. Torque Only Under Load
A common mistake during suspension overhauls is tightening the pivot bolts while the vehicle is still up on jack stands with the suspension hanging at full extension. This "pre-loads" the rubber bushings in a twisted position once the car is lowered. For the longest bushing life and the best ride quality, you should only perform the final torque sequence once the car is sitting on its own weight on level ground. This ensures the rubber in the trailing arm pivot is in its neutral, relaxed state at ride height, preventing premature tearing and squeaking.
3. Inspect the Pivot Bracket for Ovaling
While you have the old bolt removed, take a moment to closely inspect the holes in the chassis pivot bracket. If the previous bolt was loose for an extended period, the constant vibration may have "ovaled" or elongated the holes in the bracket. If the hole is no longer perfectly round, a new bolt alone won''t fix the issue and may lead to "clunking" sounds or wandering alignment. If you find damage, the bracket may need to be repaired or reinforced before installing your new EMPI pivot hardware to ensure a tight, factory-spec fit.
