Pro Tip 1: Never Forget the Jam Nut and Anti-Seize. When installing these QA1 heim joints into your threaded bungs or tie rods, always use a high-quality jam nut to lock the joint in place. Without a jam nut, the threads will eventually vibrate and "work" against each other, leading to stripped threads or total failure. Furthermore, apply a light coat of anti-seize to the threads before installation. This is especially critical for off-road VWs that see moisture or salt, as it prevents the steel joint from "cold welding" to your aluminum or steel links, making future adjustments significantly easier.
Pro Tip 2: Use High-Misalignment Spacers for Maximum Travel. If you are using these rod ends for suspension components on a long-travel Baja or rail, remember that the "ball" of the heim joint has a limited range of motion before the bolt hits the housing. To get the most "articulation" out of your setup, we recommend installing high-misalignment spacers. These spacers reduce the bolt size slightly but allow the joint to pivot at much steeper angles without binding. This is the secret to preventing broken rod ends during full suspension droop or compression.
Pro Tip 3: Proper Maintenance for Metal-to-Metal Joints. Unlike Teflon-lined joints which are self-lubricating, the CM Series is a metal-to-metal design. While this makes it incredibly strong, it does require occasional maintenance to keep it operating smoothly. We recommend cleaning the ball area with a dry lubricant spray or a specialized rod end cleaner after every off-road trip. Avoid using heavy greases that can attract sand and grit, as that grit will act like sandpaper inside the joint and cause premature wear. A clean heim joint is a long-lasting heim joint!!
