OVERVIEW
There is nothing more quintessential to the air-cooled experience than the warmth of the heater boxes kicking in on a crisp morning drive, but that experience is quickly ruined if your heater control knob is frozen solid or feels like it is grinding against gravel. This premium heater cable is the lifeline of your Volkswagen''s climate control system, specifically engineered for the unique mid-year 1963 to 1964 transition models. As a split-style cable, this single unit runs from your central control lever through the chassis guide tubes and branches out to actuate the flaps on both the left and right heater boxes simultaneously. Over decades of service, original cables often succumb to moisture-induced oxidation or physical kinking within the guide tubes, leading to a stiff lever that can eventually snap at the most inconvenient moment. Replacing your worn-out, crusty cable with this high-quality EMPI unit restores that smooth, factory-fresh tactile feedback to your interior controls, ensuring you can dial in the perfect amount of heat without fear of mechanical failure.
At Appletree Automotive, we know that precision is everything when it comes to vintage VW restoration. This heater cable (Part Number 111-711-629E) is manufactured to exacting tolerances to match the specific length and throw required for the 1963.5 and 1964 model years. Unlike generic "one size fits all" cables that often require frustrating modifications or leave you with excess slack, this cable is designed to drop into your Beetle or Karmann Ghia with ease. The high-tensile steel construction provides the necessary rigidity to push the heater box flaps open against spring tension while maintaining the flexibility needed to navigate the bends of the chassis tubes. Whether you are performing a concourse-level restoration or simply trying to get your daily driver ready for winter, this cable is an essential upgrade for any enthusiast who values functional reliability and original equipment performance.

PRO TIPS
1. Clean and Lubricate Before Installation
Before you slide your new cable into the chassis guide tubes, take the time to thoroughly clean the internal tubes with a burst of compressed air or a flexible wire brush. Once clear, generously coat the entire length of the new cable with a high-quality white lithium grease or a specialized cable lubricant. This not only prevents future rust and corrosion caused by condensation inside the tunnel but also significantly reduces friction, making the heater lever much easier to operate and extending the life of the cable by several years. Never install a cable "dry," as the metal-on-metal contact will eventually lead to binding and premature wear.
2. Inspect the Chassis Guide Tubes
If your old cable snapped or was extremely difficult to move, the culprit might not be the cable itself, but a collapsed or rusted guide tube inside the Napoleon hat or the central tunnel. Before finalizing the installation of your new 111-711-629E cable, use a flashlight to inspect the entry and exit points of the tubes. If you encounter significant resistance when feeding the new cable, do not force it, as you may kink the wire and ruin the cable. If the tube is blocked, you may need to use a heavy-duty speedo-cable-style snake to clear the path and ensure the new cable can move freely throughout its entire range of motion.
3. Perfect the Adjustment Balance
To get the best performance from your heating system, adjust the cable at the heater box levers with the interior control knob in the fully "off" position. Pull the cable tight at the heater box end so the flaps are completely closed, and then tighten the barrel nuts or pinch bolts. Once secured, test the throw of the lever to ensure that when the knob is pulled to the "on" position, the flaps on both heater boxes open fully and symmetrically. If one side opens more than the other, your heat distribution will be uneven. Proper synchronization ensures that both the driver and passenger footwells receive equal airflow, maximizing the efficiency of your air-cooled engine''s natural heat exchange process.
