OVERVIEW
When you are building a high-displacement stroker engine, the connecting rods are the literal backbone of your rotating assembly. These IAP H-Beam Connecting Rods are engineered specifically for the enthusiast who demands more than what a standard I-beam can offer. Measuring 5.600 inches in length and featuring a 2.00-inch Chevy journal, these rods provide the ideal geometry for long-stroke crankshafts. By utilizing the Chevy journal size, which is smaller than the traditional Volkswagen journal, you gain critical clearance between the rod cap and the camshaft, as well as the engine case itself. This design allows for a much more aggressive stroke without the heart-wrenching anxiety of structural interference during high-RPM operation. Crafted from vacuum-melted 4340 chromoly steel, these rods are forged to withstand the immense tensile and compressive forces found in turbocharged or high-compression naturally aspirated builds.
The attention to detail on these 00-8322-0 rods is what sets them apart from budget-tier alternatives. Each rod features radiused caps, a crucial design element that significantly reduces the amount of clearancing required inside your magnesium or aluminum engine case. This preserves the structural integrity of your case webbing while allowing for a smooth, rotating assembly. These rods come equipped with high-tensile 5/16-inch forged bolts, ensuring that your rod caps stay exactly where they belong even when you are pushing the needle toward 7,000 RPM. Whether you are building a weekend warrior for the drag strip or a reliable, high-torque engine for a heavy camper or sand rail, these H-beam rods provide the peace of mind that only professional-grade race components can offer. Don''t settle for stock-style components when your engine''s life depends on the strength of its internal hardware.
FITMENT
These rods are designed for performance Volkswagen Type 1, 2, and 3 engines utilizing a stroker crankshaft with Chevy 2.00-inch journals. Common applications include:
- Volkswagen Beetle: 1954 through 1977 (Sedan and Convertible)
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1956 through 1974
- Volkswagen Bus / Transporter: 1954 through 1971 (Type 2)
- Volkswagen Type 3: 1962 through 1973 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback)
- Volkswagen Thing: 1973 through 1974
- Custom Builds: Sand rails, Dune Buggies, and Trikes using VW-based air-cooled engines.
- Note: Requires a crankshaft specifically machined for 2.00-inch Chevy journals.

PRO TIPS
1. Verify Camshaft Clearance
Even though these rods feature radiused caps and a smaller Chevy journal to aid in clearance, you must always "dry fit" your rotating assembly. When using a 5.6-inch rod with a long-stroke crank, the rod bolts can come dangerously close to the camshaft lobes. We highly recommend using a small-base circle camshaft if you encounter interference. Always rotate the engine by hand on the stand multiple times and use a feeler gauge to ensure you have at least .040 to .060 inches of clearance between the rod and the cam. It is much cheaper to check this now than it is to rebuild the engine after a catastrophic failure on the first start-up.
2. Use a Rod Bolt Stretch Gauge
While torque wrenches are the standard in many shops, the most accurate way to install high-performance rod bolts is by measuring "stretch." When you torque a bolt, friction on the threads can give you a false reading. A stretch gauge measures the actual physical elongation of the bolt, which is the only true indicator of the clamping force being applied. If you don''t have access to a stretch gauge, ensure you are using a high-quality assembly lubricant on the threads and under the head of the bolt to get the most accurate torque reading possible. Never reuse rod bolts if they have been over-stretched beyond their elastic limit.
3. Choose the Right Bearings
Since these rods utilize a 2.00-inch Chevy journal, you cannot use standard Volkswagen rod bearings. You must purchase Chevy-style 2.00-inch bearings, such as the Clevite 77 series or equivalent. Additionally, ensure your crankshaft is ground specifically for this journal size. The benefit here is that Chevy bearings are available in various thicknesses, allowing you to fine-tune your oil clearance with extreme precision. We recommend a target oil clearance of .002 inches for most high-performance air-cooled applications to ensure proper lubrication and cooling of the rod journals under heavy load.
