OVERVIEW
When you are building a high-performance air-cooled engine, the flywheel gland nut is the single most critical fastener in your entire drivetrain. This IAP Flywheel Gland Nut is engineered from 4130 chromoly billet steel, offering a massive upgrade in tensile strength over the factory stamped or cast units. In the world of Volkswagen performance, the gland nut is responsible for holding the flywheel onto the crankshaft under immense rotational force. A failure here doesn''t just mean a broken part; it often leads to a destroyed crankshaft and flywheel. By utilizing high-grade 4130 chromoly and precision CNC machining, this gland nut provides the "super strength" required for high-revving street engines and rugged off-road builds without the "ultimate price" usually associated with race-grade hardware.
What sets this specific gland nut apart is the innovative large-head design. Traditional VW gland nuts require a separate concave washer to distribute the load against the flywheel. This 4035-10 model features a massive 42mm integrated flange that completely eliminates the need for that extra washer. By removing one more moving part from the equation, you achieve more consistent clamping force and a more direct transfer of energy. This design ensures that the pressure is distributed evenly across the face of the flywheel, preventing the "walloping" or loosening that can occur when standard washers flatten out under extreme torque. Whether you are running a stock 1600cc or a stroked-out 2332cc beast, this chromoly nut provides the peace of mind that your rotating assembly is locked down tight.
FITMENT
This high-performance 4130 chromoly gland nut is designed for use with 1200cc through 1600cc based air-cooled Volkswagen engines. It is compatible with the following models and years:
- Volkswagen Beetle: 1950 through 1979 (Standard and Super Beetle)
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1956 through 1974
- Volkswagen Bus / Type 2: 1950 through 1971 (1600cc upright engines)
- Volkswagen Thing / Type 181: 1973 through 1974
- Volkswagen Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback): 1962 through 1973
- Custom Applications: Ideal for Sand Rails, Dune Buggies, and Trikes utilizing Type 1 VW engine cases.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Torque is Non-Negotiable
The number one cause of flywheel failure in air-cooled Volkswagens is insufficient torque on the gland nut. For a high-performance 4130 chromoly nut like this one, you must use a high-quality torque wrench and a flywheel locking tool. Most builders recommend torqueing this nut to at least 217 ft-lbs, though many performance builders go as high as 250 ft-lbs depending on the crankshaft material. Never attempt to "wing it" with an impact wrench; the precision of a manual torque reading is essential to ensure the gland nut doesn''t back out under high-RPM harmonics.
2. Lubricate the Threads and the Needle Bearing
Before installation, apply a small amount of high-pressure grease or engine oil to the threads of the gland nut to ensure an accurate torque reading. Furthermore, do not forget that this gland nut houses the pilot needle bearing for the transmission input shaft. You must pack that needle bearing with a high-quality, high-temperature disc brake wheel bearing grease. Failure to lubricate this bearing will lead to premature wear of the transmission input shaft and potential shifting issues when the clutch is depressed.
3. Check for Crankshaft End Play
Whenever you are replacing a flywheel gland nut or the flywheel itself, it is the perfect time to verify your crankshaft end play. With the gland nut torqued to spec, use a dial indicator to measure the fore and aft movement of the flywheel. For most stock and mild performance engines, you are looking for .003 to .006 inches. If the end play is incorrect, you must adjust the three shims behind the flywheel. Installing a heavy-duty nut like the 4035-10 is a great upgrade, but it won''t save an engine that has improperly set end play which can lead to thrust bearing failure.
