OVERVIEW
When you are deep into a classic restoration or simply trying to keep your daily driver functional, it is often the smallest components that cause the biggest headaches. The fuel door finger pull release is a prime example of a tiny part with a massive job. Over decades of use, the original plastic handles become brittle from heat cycles and UV exposure, eventually snapping off or stripping out at the mounting point. This leaves you fumbling inside the glove box or under the dash just to put gas in your car. This EMPI replacement finger pull is engineered to restore that factory-smooth operation, ensuring you never have to resort to using pliers or a screwdriver to pop your fuel door again. It is a critical touchpoint for any 1969 to 1974 era Volkswagen owner who values both convenience and interior authenticity.
At Appletree Automotive, we know that "close enough" isn''t good enough for an air-cooled purist. This finger pull release (Part # 111-823-461) is manufactured from high-impact, automotive-grade plastic designed to withstand the tension of the release cable without flexing or cracking. It features the correct ergonomic shape and textured grip that matches the original German design perfectly. Whether you are finishing a concours-level Karmann Ghia restoration or just tired of the broken plastic nub in your Super Beetle, this component provides the tactile feedback and reliability you expect. Don''t let a five-dollar part stand between you and a seamless gas station experience; upgrade to a fresh, sturdy release handle and keep your classic VW''s interior looking sharp and fully functional.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Inspect the Release Cable Tension
Before installing your new finger pull, take a moment to inspect the inner wire of your fuel release cable. If the cable is frayed or rusted, it will create excessive resistance that can snap even a brand-new handle. We recommend sliding the cable out slightly and applying a few drops of a high-quality cable lubricant or graphite spray. This ensures that when you pull the handle, the energy goes into popping the door rather than fighting friction inside the cable housing.
Tip 2: Avoid Overtightening the Set Screw
The finger pull is held onto the cable via a small set screw. A common mistake is overtightening this screw in an attempt to make it "extra secure," which can actually crack the plastic housing or crush the cable end. Tighten the screw until it is snug and the handle no longer wobbles on the cable. For added security without the risk of breakage, you can apply a tiny drop of blue threadlocker to the set screw threads before installation.
Tip 3: Check the Fuel Door Spring and Latch
If your fuel door doesn''t "pop" open when you pull the handle, the problem might not be the handle at all, but a weak leaf spring or a gummed-up latch at the fuel door itself. While you are working on the interior handle, have a partner pull the release while you clean the latch mechanism on the exterior with a degreaser. Apply a small dab of white lithium grease to the latch pin. This reduces the force required to open the door, significantly extending the lifespan of your new finger pull release.
