These EMPI 3-bolt exhaust gaskets are a standard requirement for aircooled Volkswagen performance exhaust systems. They are designed to provide a secure seal between the header collector and the muffler or stinger. These gaskets are compatible with most aftermarket 3-bolt flange systems used on:

• VW Beetle and Super Beetle
• VW Karmann Ghia
• VW Bus / Type 2
• VW Thing / Type 181
• Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, and Baja Bugs

With a 52.45mm (approximately 2-inch) inner diameter, they fit the common "small flange" 3-bolt collectors found on EMPI, Bugpack, and similar 4-into-1 header systems.

Proper Flange Cleaning: Before installing your new pair of gaskets, ensure that both the header flange and the muffler flange are perfectly clean. Use a gasket scraper or a wire wheel to remove any burnt-on remnants of the old paper gasket. A flat, clean surface is the only way to ensure a leak-free connection and prevent the annoying "ticking" sound of an exhaust leak.

Use High-Temp Sealant: While these heat-resistant paper gaskets seal well on their own, applying a very thin, even layer of high-temperature RTV copper silicone to both sides of the gasket can provide extra insurance. This is especially helpful if your exhaust flanges have slight warping or pitting from years of heat cycles and vibration.

The Post-Heat Re-Torque: Paper gaskets are prone to slight compression after their first heat cycle. After you install the gaskets and run the engine to operating temperature, let the exhaust cool down completely and then re-check the tightness of the three collector bolts. Tightening them down one more time after they have "set" will significantly extend the life of the gasket and prevent it from blowing out.
