High-Performance Cooling with a Show-Quality Finish
When it comes to maintaining the longevity of your air-cooled engine, airflow management is the single most critical factor. This EMPI Doghouse Style Fan Shroud is engineered to provide superior cooling efficiency for high-performance 1500cc and 1600cc engines by utilizing the "doghouse" design. Unlike early-style shrouds that blow hot air from the oil cooler back into the engine compartment, the doghouse configuration features a dedicated exhaust duct at the rear. This allows the oil cooler to receive a fresh, independent stream of air that is then vented completely out of the engine bay, significantly lowering cylinder head temperatures and oil temps. Whether you are building a high-revving street machine or a rugged off-road rail, this shroud ensures that your engine stays cool under pressure while looking absolutely flawless.
The aesthetic appeal of this shroud is unmatched, featuring a deep, high-lustre chrome finish that serves as the centerpiece of any custom engine build. Because this specific model is designed without heater duct outlets, it offers a "clean look" that is highly sought after by enthusiasts who have deleted their heater boxes or are running simplified exhaust systems. By removing the bulky ducting ports, you achieve a streamlined, uncluttered appearance that highlights the mechanical beauty of the Type 1 engine. Built with heavy-duty steel construction, this shroud resists the vibration and flexing often found in cheaper, thin-gauge alternatives, ensuring that your cooling fan remains perfectly centered and efficient for years of reliable service.

Pro Tips from the Appletree Garage
1. Optimize Fitment with a Shroud Spacer Kit
While this shroud is built to factory-style dimensions, aftermarket chrome parts can sometimes have slight variances in tolerances compared to original German tin. We highly recommend using Shroud Spacer Kit # 4552-51 during installation. These spacers allow you to fine-tune the height of the shroud, ensuring that it clears the cylinder head tins and intake manifolds without rubbing. A properly spaced shroud prevents metal-on-metal vibration and ensures that the fan has the perfect amount of clearance within the housing for maximum CFM output.
2. Ensure the Rear Tin and Seals are Perfect
The "Doghouse" design only works if the air is actually forced out of the car. When installing this chrome shroud, you must use the correct doghouse-style rear engine tin (the piece that sits behind the shroud). Additionally, ensure that the rubber seal between the shroud and the oil cooler duct is seated perfectly. If this seal is missing or torn, hot air from the oil cooler will be sucked back into the fan, defeating the entire purpose of the doghouse design and leading to overheating issues in your VW.
3. Verify Internal Air Vane Alignment
One of the biggest mistakes builders make with aftermarket shrouds is ignoring the internal air vanes. This EMPI shroud comes with internal baffles designed to direct air specifically over the cylinders and heads. Before final assembly, double-check that these vanes are secure and not obstructed. If you are running a high-performance engine, some builders choose to slightly "tweak" these vanes to prioritize airflow to the #3 cylinder, which notoriously runs the hottest. Always use a high-quality fan and ensure it is torqued correctly to the alternator or generator shaft to prevent any wobbling inside your new chrome shroud.
