PRO TIPS
1. Always Sync at Operating Temperature
Never attempt to synchronize your carburetors on a cold engine. As an air-cooled engine warms up, the metal components expand, and the idle speed will naturally shift. Furthermore, if your carburetors are equipped with electric or manual chokes, they must be fully opened and disengaged before you start the tuning process. If you sync while the chokes are active, your settings will be completely incorrect once the engine reaches its normal operating temperature, leading to a poor idle and potential stalling at stoplights.
2. Don''t Forget the Off-Idle Synchronization
Many novice tuners only synchronize their carburetors at idle, but for true performance, you must check them "off-idle" as well. Once your idle air volume is matched, have an assistant hold the throttle steady at approximately 2,500 to 3,000 RPM (or use a throttle stick). Place the EMPI Synchrometer back on the carbs to ensure they are still pulling the same volume. If they are uneven at high RPM, it indicates that your throttle linkage rods are not adjusted to the same length or that one side is "lagging" behind the other, which is a primary cause of engine vibration and popping.
