OVERVIEW
When it comes to maintaining the stopping power of your vintage Volkswagen, the smallest components often play the most critical roles. This replacement 6mm brake bleeder valve is a vital link in your Type 2 Bus''s hydraulic chain, specifically designed to allow for the precise evacuation of air from the rear wheel cylinders. Over decades of service, original bleeder valves frequently succumb to the elements, becoming seized due to galvanic corrosion or suffering from rounded-off hex heads caused by previous owners using the wrong tools. Installing a fresh, clean bleeder valve ensures that when it comes time to service your brakes, you can achieve a rock-solid pedal without the frustration of leaks or stripped threads that can compromise your safety on the road.
Crafted to meet or exceed original equipment standards, this bleeder valve features the correct internal taper and threading to provide a positive, metal-to-metal seal against the wheel cylinder body. Whether you are performing a full ground-up restoration on a 1965 Split Window or simply keeping your 1970 Bay Window daily driver safe for the modern commute, having reliable hardware is non-negotiable. At Appletree Automotive, we understand that air-cooled enthusiasts demand parts that fit perfectly the first time. This high-quality component provides the peace of mind needed to ensure your heavy Bus stops predictably and effectively, preventing the "spongy" pedal feel associated with trapped air in the lines.

PRO TIPS
1. Use the Right Tool for the Job
One of the most common mistakes VW owners make is using a standard open-end wrench or, even worse, pliers to loosen an old bleeder valve. Because these valves are often exposed to road salt and moisture, they can become incredibly stubborn. Always use a dedicated flare nut wrench or a 6-point socket to break the initial seal. A 6-point tool contacts all six sides of the hex head equally, significantly reducing the risk of rounding off the corners. If the valve feels like it won''t budge, don''t force it; apply a high-quality penetrating oil and let it soak for several hours before attempting to turn it again.
2. The "Heat and Tap" Method for Seized Valves
If you find that your old bleeder valve is seized into the wheel cylinder, a small amount of localized heat can be your best friend. Use a propane torch to carefully heat the area of the wheel cylinder surrounding the bleeder valve (be careful not to melt any nearby rubber boots or brake lines). Once the area is hot, give the top of the bleeder valve a few sharp taps with a small hammer. This vibration, combined with the thermal expansion of the metal, often breaks the bond of the rust. Once the old valve is out, ensure the internal threads are clean of debris before installing your new 6mm valve from Appletree.
3. Maintain the Dust Cap for Longevity
The hole in the center of the bleeder valve is a direct gateway for moisture and dirt to enter your hydraulic system or clog the valve itself. After you have finished bleeding your brakes and have tightened the valve to the proper torque, always install a rubber bleeder dust cap. This simple, inexpensive plastic or rubber cover prevents the internal passage from rusting shut and keeps road grime out of the seat. This ensures that the next time you need to flush your brake fluidwhich should be done every two years to prevent internal system corrosionthe job will be quick and painless.
