1. Master the Surface Prep for Perfect Penetration

Since these body tabs are made of raw mild steel, they often arrive with a thin layer of oil or light mill scale to prevent shelf rust. Before you even think about firing up the welder, you must clean the tab and the mounting surface thoroughly. Use a flap disc or a wire wheel to strip the metal down to a bright, shiny finish. If you leave mill scale on the tab, your weld bead will "float" on top rather than penetrating deeply into the base metal, which is a recipe for a mount snapping off mid-trail. After grinding, a quick wipe-down with acetone will ensure there are no contaminants left to cause porosity in your weld.

2. Use a "Dummy Bolt" for Perfect Alignment

When you are welding multiple tabs to a chassis for a single body panel, alignment is everything. If one tab is slightly off, the bolt won''t line up, and you''ll end up cross-threading hardware or stressing the body panel.
