OVERVIEW
When you are building a high-performance air-cooled Volkswagen engine, the efficiency of your oil cooling system is the lifeline of your build. These EMPI 30-degree barbed fittings are engineered specifically to solve the clearance and routing headaches that come with installing external oil coolers, full-flow oil pumps, and remote filter brackets. In the cramped confines of a Beetle engine bay or the exposed rear of a sand rail, a straight fitting often creates dangerous kinks in your oil lines, while a 90-degree fitting might be too restrictive or point the hose in the wrong direction entirely. This unique 30-degree offset provides that perfect "sweet spot" angle, allowing for a smooth, high-flow transition from your 3/8 NPT ports to your 1/2-inch ID oil hoses without stressing the rubber or restricting vital oil pressure. Whether you are plumbing a Mesa cooler or a custom external reservoir, these fittings ensure your lubricant stays where it belongsflowing freely through the heart of your engine.
Crafted from high-quality, corrosion-resistant brass, these fittings are designed to withstand the extreme heat cycles and vibration common in the VW world. Unlike cheap pot-metal alternatives that can crack under the torque of an NPT installation, these EMPI units offer the durability required for both daily drivers and rugged off-road applications. The deep-cut barbs are specifically tapered to bite into 1/2-inch oil hoses, providing a secure, leak-proof seal that won''t back off under the high-pressure surges of a cold start. By utilizing a 3/8 NPT thread, these fittings are compatible with the vast majority of aftermarket VW oiling components, making them a universal staple for any builder''s toolbox. When you are pushing your flat-four to the limit, you shouldn''t have to worry about a plumbing failure; these fittings provide the professional-grade peace of mind that Appletree Auto customers have come to expect for their vintage Volkswagen projects.

PRO TIPS
1. Master the NPT Seal Without the Mess
NPT (National Pipe Thread) is a tapered thread that seals by metal-to-metal interference, but it always requires a secondary sealant to be 100% leak-proof. I highly recommend using a high-quality thread sealant paste or Teflon tape, but there is a trick: always leave the first two threads at the bottom of the fitting bare. If you wrap the tape all the way to the end, tiny fragments of Teflon can shear off during installation and enter your oil gallery, which can easily clog a lifter or an oil spray nozzle. Tighten the fitting until it is snug and pointing in your desired direction, but avoid "over-torquing" to reach a specific angle, as you can crack the aluminum casing of an oil pump or filter head if you go too far.
2. Secure Your Lines with Proper Clamping Pressure
While the barbs on these EMPI fittings are designed to grip the hose, you must use high-quality fuel or oil injection style clamps rather than standard hardware store worm-gear clamps. Standard worm clamps often "pinch" the hose or cut into the rubber over time due to the engine''s heat and vibration. For a professional-looking and ultra-secure fit, use Oetiker-style crimp clamps or constant-tension spring clamps. Before sliding the hose onto the barb, a tiny drop of clean engine oil on the barb will help the hose slide on fully without tearing the inner liner of the hose, ensuring a seat that won''t fail under pressure.
3. Plan for Engine Movement and Vibration
One of the biggest mistakes I see in air-cooled VW plumbing is "tight-lining," where the hose is pulled taut between the engine and a body-mounted oil cooler. Remember, your VW engine sits on rubber mounts and moves significantly under torque. Always leave a "service loop" or a bit of slack in the 1/2-inch hose coming off these 30-degree fittings. The 30-degree angle is fantastic for directing the hose away from the hot cylinders or exhaust, but if the hose is too tight, the constant engine rocking will eventually fatigue the brass fitting or cause the hose to pull off the barb. Always check your clearances with the engine at full operating temperature to ensure the hoses aren''t touching any sharp sheet metal edges.
