OVERVIEW
Upgrade your air-cooled Volkswagen''s stopping power with the EMPI Ball Joint Front Disc Brake Kit, a premium solution designed for those who demand modern safety and reliability from their classic ride. Transitioning from outdated drum brakes to a high-performance disc setup is the single most effective safety modification you can make for your Beetle. This kit eliminates the dreaded "brake fade" associated with heat-soaked drums and provides a consistent, firm pedal feel that inspires confidence whether you are navigating stop-and-go city traffic or cruising down a winding coastal highway. By utilizing a 4 on 130mm bolt pattern with 14mm x 1.5mm threaded holes, this kit maintains the classic look of your stock wheels while delivering the massive mechanical advantage of dual-piston calipers and ventilated friction surfaces.
Engineered specifically for 1966 through 1977 Standard Beetles equipped with a ball joint front end, this package is the "no-nonsense" choice for builders who already possess disc-brake-specific spindles or are planning a custom suspension setup. At Appletree Automotive, we know that the "devil is in the details," which is why this EMPI kit arrives complete with high-quality wheel bearings, grease seals, and all necessary mounting hardware to ensure a seamless installation. Please note that because this kit is designed to maximize performance, it requires the use of 1969-and-later style tie rod ends and a minimum of 15-inch wheels to clear the caliper housing. Don''t settle for "good enough" when it comes to your Beetle''s braking performance; choose a kit that is built to handle the rigors of modern driving with the legendary quality of EMPI components.

PRO TIPS
1. Verify Your Spindle Type Before Starting
The most common mistake we see during installation is attempting to bolt this kit onto stock drum brake spindles. It is physically impossible to mount the calipers to a drum spindle because they lack the necessary mounting "ears" or flange. If your Beetle currently has drum brakes, you MUST purchase a set of disc brake spindles (either stock height or dropped) to use this kit. This specific kit, part number 22-3028-0, is intended for builders who already have those spindles in hand or are ordering them separately. Always double-check your spindle geometry to ensure the caliper mounting holes align perfectly before you begin packing your new bearings with grease.
2. Proper Bearing Packing and Seal Seating
Long-term reliability of your front end depends entirely on how you treat the wheel bearings during the initial install. Never simply "wipe" grease on the outside of the bearing. You must use a bearing packer or the "palm of the hand" method to force high-quality high-temp disc brake wheel bearing grease through the cage until it oozes out the other side. Additionally, when installing the grease seals on the back of the rotor, ensure they are seated perfectly flush. A cocked seal will leak grease onto your new brake pads, ruining their friction coefficient and requiring an immediate (and expensive) replacement of the pads and a thorough cleaning of the rotors.
3. The 1969+ Tie Rod End Requirement
When upgrading a 1966-1968 Beetle to this disc brake setup, you must upgrade your tie rod ends to the 1969-and-later style. The taper on the steering arm of most disc brake spindles is designed for the larger 1969+ tie rod ends. Attempting to use the smaller, early-style tie rod ends will result in a loose fit that can lead to catastrophic steering failure. While you are in there, it is the perfect time to inspect your steering dampener and ball joints. Since you already have the front end disassembled, replacing these wear items ensures that your Beetle doesn''t just stop better, but handles with the precision it had when it first rolled off the assembly line.
