OVERVIEW
In the world of air-cooled Volkswagens, your oil pressure is the true heartbeat of your engine. Unlike water-cooled modern vehicles, an air-cooled flat-four relies heavily on its oil supply to not only lubricate moving parts but to carry heat away from the cylinders and heads. The AutoMeter Sport-Comp 2-1/16-inch mechanical oil pressure gauge (ATM3321) is the gold standard for enthusiasts who demand precision and a classic, competition-ready aesthetic. Featuring a signature black face, white increments, and a high-contrast red pointer, this gauge provides instantaneous, real-time feedback that electrical gauges simply cannot match. When you are screaming down the track in a sand rail or cruising the coast in a vintage Type 1, having a mechanical Bourdon tube movement ensures that you see every fluctuation in pressure without the lag of a digital sender or the interference of a sketchy electrical ground.
The Sport-Comp series is legendary for its ruggedness and "no-nonsense" design, making it the perfect match for the vibrating, high-heat environment of a VW engine bay. This mechanical gauge operates by routing a small amount of pressurized oil through a nylon or copper line directly to the back of the unit, providing a direct physical link between your engine''s oiling system and the needle on your dash. It reads from 0 to 100 PSI, which is the ideal range for high-performance VW engines that often see higher cold-start pressures than stock configurations. Whether you are mounting this in a custom center console, a radio-block-off plate, or a specialized gauge pod, the 52.4mm diameter ensures a perfect fit into standard automotive cutouts. Don''t leave the life of your expensive stroker motor or vintage original engine to a "dummy light" on the speedometer; give your dash the professional upgrade it deserves with AutoMeter''s proven technology.

PRO TIPS
1. Upgrade to Copper Tubing for Peace of Mind
While the included 10-foot nylon tubing is functional for many street applications, we highly recommend upgrading to a copper line kit (AutoMeter #3224) for air-cooled VWs. The engine temperatures in a Beetle or Bus engine bay can climb significantly, and the vibration of the flat-four can sometimes cause nylon lines to become brittle or melt if they accidentally touch a cylinder tin or exhaust component. Copper tubing provides a much higher level of durability and heat resistance, ensuring that oil stays inside the line and off your floorboards. If you do use the nylon line, ensure it is routed through a rubber grommet whenever it passes through a metal firewall to prevent chaffing.
2. Use a "T-Fitting" to Keep Your Stock Warning Light
Many builders make the mistake of removing their stock oil pressure "idiot light" sender to install the gauge line. In a VW, that light is your first line of defense if a belt snaps or a catastrophic leak occurs while you aren''t looking at your gauges. We recommend using a brass T-fitting or an oil pressure sender extension block at the engine case (located behind the distributor). This allows you to thread both your stock oil pressure switch and the AutoMeter mechanical line into the same oil gallery. You get the best of both worlds: a bright red warning light for emergencies and a precision Sport-Comp gauge for detailed monitoring.
3. Understanding Cold Start vs. Operating Pressure
Don''t be alarmed if your Sport-Comp gauge pegs near 80 or 90 PSI immediately after a cold start, especially if you are running a high-volume oil pump or heavy-weight oil. This is normal behavior for an air-cooled VW engine. As the oil warms up and reaches operating temperature (usually around 180-210 degrees Fahrenheit), you should see the pressure stabilize. On a healthy Type 1 engine, you generally look for about 10 PSI for every 1,000 RPM. If you see the pressure drop below 5-10 PSI at a hot idle, it''s time to investigate your oil weight or engine wear. The accuracy of the ATM3321 mechanical movement is what makes this diagnosis possible.
