PRO TIPS
1. Verify Pulley Alignment and Belt Tension
When installing your new 75-amp alternator, it is absolutely critical to ensure that your crank pulley and alternator pulley are perfectly aligned. If the alternator is sitting too far forward or backward on the stand, the belt will wear prematurely and put unnecessary side-load on the alternator bearings, leading to early failure. Use shims behind the pulley halves to achieve the correct belt tension; you should have about 1/2 inch of deflection when pressing firmly on the belt. Don''t over-tighten, as a "guitar-string" tight belt will ruin the front bearing of your new high-output unit in short order.
2. Upgrade Your Charging Wire Gauge
Since you are moving up to a 75-amp output, the stock 10-gauge or 12-gauge "B+" wire that runs from the alternator to the starter (or battery) might become a bottleneck or even a fire hazard under full load. To truly see the benefits of the increased amperage, we recommend upgrading that primary charging wire to at least an 8-gauge or 6-gauge multi-strand copper wire. Also, ensure your engine-to-chassis ground strap and battery-to-chassis ground are clean and tight. A high-output alternator can only perform as well as the circuit it is feeding.
3. Conversion Requirements from Generator to Alternator
If you are converting an older 12-volt engine from a generator to this 75-amp alternator, remember that it is not a "drop-in" swap for the hardware. You must purchase an alternator-specific mounting stand, as the diameter of the alternator body is larger than the old generator. Additionally, you will need the specific 3-piece alternator backing plate tinware to ensure proper cooling airflow is directed through the fan shroud. Finally, because the regulator is internal, you must bypass your old fender-well mounted regulator by connecting the wires together so the dash "Gen/Alt" light functions correctly and the battery receives the charge.
