OVERVIEW
Precision tuning is the heartbeat of any high-performance air-cooled Volkswagen engine, and the EMPI Air Jet for DGV, DFV, ICT, and EPC carburetors is an essential component for achieving that perfect air-fuel ratio. When you are dialing in your Weber or EMPI carburetor, the air correction jet plays a critical role in the main circuit, specifically controlling the amount of air that mixes with the fuel as engine RPMs increase. This .180 size air jet is engineered to provide the exact metering required to prevent your engine from running too rich at high speeds, ensuring that your Beetle, Bus, or Ghia maintains peak power delivery without the "stumbling" often associated with poor calibration. Whether you are running a single 34 ICT setup or a progressive 32/36 DGV, having a selection of high-quality, precision-machined brass jets is the only way to truly master your engine''s performance profile.
At Appletree Automotive, we understand that even the smallest part can make the biggest difference in how your classic VW handles the road. This EMPI air jet is manufactured to exacting tolerances, ensuring that a 180 jet flows exactly like a 180 jet should, every single time. It is designed for longevity and resistance to the harsh chemicals found in modern pump fuels. By swapping out your air jets, you can effectively "lean out" the high-end mixture if your engine is struggling at wide-open throttle, or compensate for changes in altitude and ambient temperature. Don''t settle for "close enough" when it comes to your carburetor tuning; use the components that professional engine builders trust to keep their air-cooled powerplants running cool, crisp, and responsive across the entire power band.
FITMENT
This air correction jet is compatible with a wide range of Weber and EMPI carburetors commonly found on air-cooled Volkswagens and other vintage applications. Specific carburetor fitments include:
- Weber DGV Series: Including the popular 32/36 DGV Progressive carburetors.
- Weber DFV Series: The mirrored version of the DGV, often used in specific intake configurations.
- Weber ICT Series: Primarily the Weber 34 ICT single-barrel carburetors used in dual-carb kits.
- EMPI EPC Series: Including the EMPI 34 EPC, which is the modern equivalent of the ICT.
- Holley 5200 Series: Many licensed variations of the Weber design utilize these same jet profiles.
- VW Type 1: Beetle, Super Beetle, and Karmann Ghia (1954-1979).
- VW Type 2: Bus, Transporter, and Kombi (1955-1971).
- VW Type 3: Squareback, Fastback, and Notchback.
- VW Thing: Type 181 (1973-1974).

PRO TIPS
1. Understand the Inverse Tuning Logic
One of the most common mistakes beginners make is assuming that a larger air jet makes the engine richer, like a fuel jet does. In reality, it is the opposite. A larger air jet, such as this 180, allows more air into the emulsion tube, which actually leans out the mixture at higher RPMs. If your VW is blowing black smoke or "chugging" at high speeds, you likely need to go up in air jet size. Conversely, if the engine feels like it is "dying" or losing power at the top end due to a lean condition, you should try a smaller air jet. Always tune your fuel jets first for the low-to-mid range, then use the air jets to "fine-tune" the high-RPM curve.
2. Use the Right Tools for Soft Brass
These jets are made of brass, which is a relatively soft metal designed to prevent damage to the carburetor body. However, this means they can be easily marred or "chewed up" if you use a screwdriver that is too small or too thin. Always use a high-quality flathead screwdriver that fits the slot of the jet perfectly from edge to edge. This ensures even pressure distribution and prevents the slot from stripping. If a jet is stuck, never force it; a small drop of penetrating oil and a firm, steady turn is much better than a sudden jerk that could ruin the jet or the carburetor housing.
3. Cleanliness is Essential for Accurate Metering
Because the orifice of a 180 air jet is so precise, even a tiny speck of debris or dried fuel varnish can drastically alter the air-flow characteristics and ruin your tune. Whenever you are changing jets, always spray the jet and the passage in the carburetor with a high-quality carburetor cleaner, followed by a blast of compressed air. Never use a metal wire or a drill bit to clean a jet, as this will scratch the internal bore and change the flow rate permanently. If you cannot see light clearly through the center of the jet, it is not clean enough to be installed in your engine.
