OVERVIEW
In the world of air-cooled Volkswagen performance, the smallest components often play the most critical roles in maintaining engine longevity. The EMPI Air Cleaner Hold Down Clip is a vital piece of hardware designed to ensure your intake system remains airtight and free from contaminants. Over time, original clips can lose their spring tension due to heat cycles and vibration, or worse, they disappear during a roadside filter cleaning. When these clips fail, your air cleaner lid cannot provide the necessary downward pressure to seal the filter element against the base plate. This allows "dirty" air to bypass the filter, sucking dust, grit, and debris directly into your carburetor''s venturis and eventually into your cylinders. For the serious VW enthusiast, maintaining a rock-solid seal on your rectangular air cleaner isn''t just about aesthetics; it''s about protecting your investment from premature ring and cylinder wear.
Engineered specifically for 2-1/2 inch tall rectangular air cleaner assemblies, these clips are the gold standard for Weber Progressive, DGV, and DFEV carburetor setups commonly found on Beetles, Busses, and Dune Buggies. Crafted from high-tensile spring steel and finished with a corrosion-resistant zinc plating, these clips are built to withstand the harsh, high-heat environment of an air-cooled engine bay. Whether you are navigating a dusty trail in a Baja Bug or cruising the strip in a concours-level Karmann Ghia, these clips provide the unwavering clamping force required to keep your air filter element compressed and functional. Don''t let a weak or missing clip compromise your engine''s performance; these EMPI replacements offer an exact fit and the peace of mind that comes with knowing your intake air is being properly scrubbed before it reaches your combustion chamber.

PRO TIPS
1. Check for Uniform Tension Across All Clips
When installing these clips, it is essential to ensure that you have a full set of four for most rectangular assemblies. Using only two or three clips can cause the top plate to tilt, creating a microscopic gap on the unclipped side. This "path of least resistance" allows unfiltered air to enter the engine. We always recommend replacing clips in full sets so that the spring tension is uniform across the entire perimeter of the air cleaner. This ensures the gasket on the bottom of the filter element is evenly compressed against the carburetor base plate, providing a 360-degree seal against engine-killing dust.
2. Pre-Bend for Custom Tension Needs
While these clips are precision-manufactured for 2-1/2 inch assemblies, variations in filter element brands can sometimes result in a slightly tighter or looser fit. If you find the clip is too difficult to snap into place, or conversely, if it feels a bit loose, you can slightly adjust the "shoulder" of the clip using a pair of needle-nose pliers. Be careful not to over-bend, as spring steel can become brittle if worked too much. A slight adjustment ensures the clip "snaps" into the groove with a positive engagement, preventing it from vibrating loose during high-RPM operation or rough off-road driving.
3. Prevent "Clip Launch" During Maintenance
Every VW mechanic has experienced the frustration of a hold-down clip "launching" into the depths of the engine tin or behind the fan shroud during a routine filter inspection. To prevent this, always place one hand over the clip while prying it off with your thumb or a flathead screwdriver. If you are working on a buggy or a sand rail where the engine is exposed, consider tethering the clips or simply keeping a few spares in your glove box. Given their small size and the critical job they do, having a few extra 00-9589-0 clips on hand is a cheap insurance policy against being stranded with a compromised intake system.
