1. Surface Preparation is Paramount
Before installing your new EMPI gaskets, it is absolutely vital to ensure both the top of the carburetor body and the bottom of the air cleaner base plate are perfectly clean and flat. Use a lint-free rag dampened with carburetor cleaner to remove any old gasket residue, oil film, or fuel varnish. If your air cleaner base plate is made of thin stamped steel, check it for flatness by placing it on a piece of glass; if it is warped from previous over-tightening, the new gasket may struggle to seal. A flat surface ensures the gasket can do its job without requiring excessive torque.
2. Avoid Over-Tightening the Hardware
One of the most common mistakes VW enthusiasts make is cranking down too hard on the air cleaner mounting nuts. The goal is to compress the gasket just enough to create a seal, not to crush it into oblivion. Over-tightening can actually bow the air cleaner base or, worse, strip the threads out of the zinc-alloy carburetor body.
