PRO TIPS FROM THE SHOP

1. Don''t Forget the Filter Oil

While the gauze element provides excellent airflow, it relies on "tackiness" to trap the smallest dust particles. Before installation, ensure the element is lightly and evenly coated with a dedicated gauze filter oil. Avoid over-saturating the filter, as excess oil can be sucked into the carburetor air corrector jets, leading to a stumble or poor idling. A light red tint across the entire element is usually the perfect indicator of proper coverage.

2. Properly Route Your Breather Line

The integrated breather tube on the base of this air cleaner is there for a reason. Always connect this to your oil filler stand or crankcase breather box using a high-quality 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch ID hose (depending on your specific vent size). If you leave this open, you risk oily mist spraying onto your chrome and engine tins. If you are running an aftermarket breather box, you can cap this nipple off, but for most stock configurations, it is the best way to vent internal engine pressure back through the intake.

3. Check Your Decklid Clearance

On certain vehicles, specifically early Karmann Ghias or Beetles with aftermarket "stand-offs," vertical clearance can be tight. Before slamming your decklid shut for the first time after installation, place a small ball of aluminum foil or clay on top of the air cleaner and close the lid gently. Re-open the lid and check the compression of the material. This ensures that the engine''s natural vibration won''t cause the air cleaner to rub against the paint or structural bracing of your decklid.
