1. Verify Your Machining Specs: When taking your engine case and cylinder heads to the machine shop, it is vital to specify that you are using 94mm "Thick Wall" 92s. A common mistake is for a machinist to bore the case for standard 92mm cylinders, which are smaller. These cylinders require the exact same 97.2mm case bore and 101.1mm head bore as a 94mm kit. Double-check these clearances before assembly to ensure a snug, leak-free fit that properly centers the cylinder on the cylinder stud pattern.
2. Critical Deck Height Measurement: With a 2180cc stroker build, your deck height is the most important measurement for engine longevity and pump-gas compatibility. Aim for a deck height between .040'' and .060''. Because these are stroker pistons, they are designed to sit deeper in the cylinder to compensate for the longer throw of the 82mm crank, but you must still mock up all four corners. Use high-quality copper or steel base shims to achieve your desired compression ratio and ensure you don''t have piston-to-head contact at high RPMs.
3. Proper Ring Gapping and Break-In: Never install pistons straight out of the box without checking the ring end gap. Use a feeler gauge to ensure the top and second rings have adequate expansion room; typically, .014'' to .016'' is a safe baseline for a high-performance street engine. During the initial startup, use a high-zinc (ZDDP) break-in oil and avoid idling for long periods. Run the engine between 2000-2500 RPM for the first 20 minutes to properly splash-lubricate the camshaft and seat the rings against the new cylinder walls.
