This EMPI 8-pass high-performance oil cooler is designed for VW air-cooled engines but is not a direct bolt-on replacement for the factory stock cooler. To successfully install this unit on a standard Volkswagen motor, you must utilize an oil cooler bypass (EMPI P/N 9203) or integrate it into a custom full-flow oil system. It features 1/2" copper tubing and mechanically expanded aluminum fins for superior heat dissipation compared to standard coolers.

Pro Tech Tips for Installation

Prioritize Airflow and Protection: To get the most out of the 8-pass design, mount the cooler in a location with high-velocity airflow, such as under the rear luggage tray or near the transaxle. However, ensure it is positioned or shielded to prevent damage from road debris kicked up by the tires.

Use High-Pressure Oil Hoses: Since this cooler uses 1/2" barbed fittings, ensure you are using high-quality, reinforced oil hose rated for high temperatures and pressures. Always secure these connections with heavy-duty hose clamps and inspect them for leaks after the engine reaches full operating temperature for the first time.

Consider a Thermostat: When running an external cooler of this size, the oil may take longer to reach operating temperature in cooler climates. Installing an inline oil thermostat will allow the oil to bypass the cooler until it reaches the proper temperature, ensuring better engine lubrication and longevity.
