1. Verify Your Engine Case Type Before Assembly

The 36 HP engine is unique and should not be confused with the later 40 HP or 1300/1600cc engines. Before you begin your installation, double-check that your engine case has the integral generator stand cast into the block. This is the hallmark of a true 36 HP engine. Because these older cases can warp over decades of heat cycles, we highly recommend "lapping" the cylinders to the head and the case. Using a small amount of valve grinding compound on the top and bottom of the cylinder seating surfaces and giving them a slight twist will ensure a perfectly flat, leak-free seal without the need for paper gaskets, which often cause more leaks than they prevent.

2. Precise Ring Gapping and Orientation

Never assume that piston rings are "drop-in" ready out of the box. Even in a high-quality AA kit, you must check the end gap of every ring inside the cylinder it will be living in. Use a piston to push the ring about an inch down into the bore to ensure it is level, then use a feeler gauge to check the gap. If the gap is too tight, the ring ends can touch when they expand from heat, leading to catastrophic engine failure. Additionally, when installing the pistons, ensure the ring gaps are staggered at 120-degree intervals. Never align a ring gap with the wrist pin bore or with another ring gap, as this will lead to excessive blow-by and oil consumption.

3. Proper Break-In for Cast Components

Cast pistons and iron cylinders require a specific break-in procedure to ensure a long service life. Always use a high-quality conventional oil with a high ZDDP (zinc) content for the first 500 miles; modern synthetic oils are often "too slippery" and will prevent the rings from properly seating against the cylinder walls. Once the engine is fired up, do not let it idle for long periods. Vary your RPMs during the first few drives and avoid lugging the engine or high-speed highway cruising for extended durations. This varying pressure helps the rings "bite" into the cylinder cross-hatch, creating the perfect mechanical seal that defines a healthy, powerful air-cooled engine.
