6-Volt High-Output Ignition Coil - For Vintage Air-Cooled VW Engines
Keep your vintage Volkswagen firing reliably with the 6-Volt Ignition Coil from Appletree Auto. Designed specifically for early air-cooled engines that utilize a 6V electrical system, this coil provides the consistent spark energy required for easy starting and smooth idling. While many classic VWs have been converted to 12-volt systems, the 6V purist knows that a healthy, high-quality coil is the heart of a well-running "original" engine. This unit is built to meet or exceed factory specifications, ensuring your vintage Beetle, Bus, or Ghia remains as dependable as the day it left the showroom.
Engineered for durability in the high-heat environment of a Volkswagen engine bay, this 6V coil features a heavy-duty housing and precision internal windings. It is a direct "bolt-in" replacement that fits perfectly into the factory mounting bracket on your fan shroud. Whether you are performing a concours restoration or simply maintaining your early-sixties daily driver, Appletree Auto provides the authentic ignition components you need to preserve the classic driving experience of your air-cooled VW.
Product Fitment & Compatibility
This 6V coil is designed for all Volkswagen Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 engines equipped with an original 6-volt electrical system. It is the correct replacement for models manufactured prior to the industry-wide shift to 12-volt systems in 1967.
- Volkswagen Beetle (Standard): 1950 - 1966
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1956 - 1966

Tech Tips & Installation Advice
- Voltage Verification: Before installation, confirm that your vehicle is still running a 6-volt system. If your battery has six filler caps, it is likely a 12V system; a true 6V battery typically has only three. Installing a 6V coil on a 12V system will cause the coil to overheat and fail almost immediately.
- Polarity Matters: For a standard negative-ground system, connect the "hot" wire from the ignition switch to the positive terminal (marked "+" or "15"). The wire leading to the distributor points should connect to the negative terminal (marked "-" or "1"). Reversing these connections will result in a significantly weaker spark.
- Clean Your Points: A new coil can only perform as well as the points and condenser it is paired with. If you are replacing a failed coil, take the time to inspect your ignition points for pitting or oxidation and ensure they are properly gapped (typically .016" for 6V distributors).
- Check Your Grounds: 6-volt systems are much more sensitive to resistance than 12-volt systems. Ensure the coil mounting bracket has a clean, metal-to-metal connection to the fan shroud and that your engine-to-chassis ground strap is free of corrosion.
- Periodic Inspection: Heat is the enemy of ignition coils. If you notice your engine beginning to stumble or die once it reaches full operating temperature, only to restart easily once it cools down, your coil may be failing internally. Replacing an aged coil is a cost-effective way to prevent being stranded.
