OVERVIEW
When you are pushing the limits of your off-road machine, the drivetrain is often the first place where weak links are exposed. The EMPI 22-Inch Axle Assembly with 930 CV Joints is engineered specifically for the enthusiast who demands maximum suspension travel and bulletproof reliability. Designed to bridge the gap between a standard Beetle transaxle and the massive 3x3 trailing arms commonly found on high-performance sand rails and Baja Bugs, this kit provides the necessary length and articulation to handle aggressive terrain. By utilizing the legendary 930-style CV joints, this assembly allows for significantly higher operating angles than stock components, ensuring that your power is delivered smoothly to the ground even when your suspension is at full droop or compression. Whether you are carving through deep dunes or navigating rocky trails, this heavy-duty setup ensures that your axles won''t be the reason you are left stranded.
This comprehensive kit is a true "bolt-in" solution for those running long-travel rear suspensions. Every component included has been selected for its ability to withstand the high-torque loads of modified air-cooled engines and the jarring impacts of off-road racing. The axles are manufactured from high-strength chromoly steel, providing the torsional flex needed to absorb shock loads without snapping. Coupled with EMPI''s precision-machined 930 CV joints, this package offers a massive upgrade in durability over the smaller Type 1 or Type 2 components. The kit doesn''t just stop at the hard parts; it includes everything required for a professional installation, from the high-clearance boots and specialized grease to the Grade 12.9 hardened bolts. When you choose this EMPI assembly from Appletree Auto, you are investing in drivetrain integrity that has been proven in the harshest environments the desert has to offer.

PRO TIPS
Proper CV Joint Packing and Greasing
One of the most common causes of premature 930 CV failure is improper lubrication during the initial assembly. You should never simply "squirt" grease into the boot and hope for the best. To properly pack these joints, you must work the grease deep into the cage and between the balls until it is forced out the other side. Use a high-quality moly-based grease, which is specifically designed for the high-pressure and high-heat environment of a CV joint. We recommend using roughly 3 to 4 ounces of grease per joint. Over-filling can actually cause the boot to expand and fail due to heat and centrifugal force, so follow the measurements closely to ensure long-lasting performance on the trail.
The Importance of Bolt Torque and Retention
The 930 CV joint uses six bolts per side, and because of the high vibration and torque loads found in off-road racing, these bolts can work themselves loose if not installed correctly. Always use the included Grade 12.9 hardened bolts and ensure the threads in the drive flanges are completely clean of grease before installation. We highly recommend using Schnorr (serrated) safety washers or a high-strength blue thread-locking compound. Torque these bolts in a star pattern to approximately 45-50 ft-lbs. It is a "master tech" best practice to re-check the torque after your first couple of hours of driving, as the components can settle and cause a slight loss in clamping force.
Verifying Suspension Travel and Binding
Before you take your first high-speed run, you must cycle your suspension through its full range of motion to check for "CV bind." With the vehicle on jack stands and the springs removed (or the torsion bars indexed), move the trailing arm from full compression to full droop. Rotate the axle by hand at both extremes. If you feel any clicking, sticking, or resistance, your suspension is traveling too far for the CV joints to handle. You may need to adjust your limit straps or bump stops to keep the 930 joints within their safe operating angle. Ignoring a binding CV joint will lead to an immediate and catastrophic axle or transaxle failure the first time you catch air.
