OVERVIEW
Upgrade your air-cooled powerplant with the ultimate evolution of the classic centrifugal advance design. The Pertronix Flame-Thrower 009-style distributor with integrated Ignitor II technology is engineered for the VW enthusiast who demands modern reliability without sacrificing the iconic look of a mechanical advance unit. While the original Bosch 009 was a staple for decades, it often suffered from flat spots and inconsistent timing curves. Pertronix has solved these legacy issues by combining the best advance characteristics of the legendary 010 and 050 distributors into a single, high-performance cast aluminum housing. This unit provides a smooth, tailored advance curve that optimizes throttle response and driveability, whether you''re cruising the coastline in a Karmann Ghia or tearing up the dunes in a lightweight rail.
What truly sets this distributor apart is the integrated Ignitor II electronic ignition system. Unlike standard points or even the original Ignitor, the Ignitor II features a powerful micro-controller that senses the coil current and adjusts the dwell throughout the entire RPM range. This adaptive dwell control provides up to 4 times more energy between 3,000 and 5,000 RPM than a standard points system, effectively eliminating high-RPM misfires and ensuring a complete burn of the air-fuel mixture. The Hall Effect integrated circuit and rotating cobalt magnets provide timing accuracy that mechanical points simply cannot match. If you are looking to "set it and forget it," while gaining significant horsepower and fuel economy benefits, this Pertronix 009 unit is the gold standard for your Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3 engine.

PRO TIPS
1. Match Your Coil Resistance for Peak Performance: To fully realize the benefits of the Ignitor II technology, you must pair this distributor with a low-resistance ignition coil. We strictly recommend using the Pertronix Flame-Thrower II coil (0.6 ohm). Using a standard high-resistance stock coil or a 3.0-ohm coil will limit the current available to the module, preventing it from reaching its full spark energy potential. Always check your coil''s primary resistance with an ohmmeter before final installation to ensure you aren''t leaving horsepower on the table.
2. Time for Total Advance, Not Just Idle: Because this is a mechanical advance distributor, timing it strictly at idle (typically 7.5 to 10 degrees BTDC) isn''t enough. To ensure your engine doesn''t overheat or ping under load, use a timing light to check the "Total Advance" at roughly 3,000 to 3,500 RPM. For most air-cooled VW engines, you want your total advance to fall between 28 and 32 degrees BTDC. This ensures that the mechanical weights have fully extended and your engine is operating at maximum efficiency during high-speed cruising.
3. Proper Wiring and Voltage Supply: When installing the Ignitor II, ensure the red wire is connected to a "switched" 12-volt source that receives a full 12 volts during both cranking and running. Many older VWs have resistive wiring or voltage drops in the factory ignition circuit. If your module isn''t receiving at least 12 volts, you may experience hard starting or intermittent stumbling. Additionally, never leave the ignition key in the "On" position while the engine is not running for extended periods; while the Ignitor II has improved protection over the original version, it is still best practice to protect your electronic components from unnecessary heat soak.
