Type 2 Bus Timing Scale Type 1 Type 1 Aircooled VW
* Fits 1972-1979 models.
* Installs by the pulley to accurately set engine timing.
* Designed for Type 1 air-cooled VW engines.
OVERVIEW
Accurate ignition timing is the lifeblood of any air-cooled Volkswagen, and when you''re piloting a heavy Type 2 Bus through modern traffic, there is absolutely no room for error. This high-quality reproduction timing scale is designed to provide the precise reference point you need to dial in your ignition advance and ensure your engine is running at peak thermal efficiency. Without a clear, stable timing scale, you are essentially flying blind, which can lead to catastrophic overheating, burned valves, or the dreaded melted piston. This scale mounts securely near the crankshaft pulley, allowing you to use a strobe timing light with total confidence, knowing that your "0" mark and degree increments are exactly where the factory intended them to be.
Specifically engineered for the 1972 through 1979 Bay Window Buses, this timing scale is a critical replacement for the original units that are frequently missing, bent, or heavily corroded after decades of exposure to engine heat and road debris. Whether you are maintaining a stock fuel-injected 2.0L engine or a custom Type 4 performance build, having a legible and accurate degree scale is paramount for tuning your distributor''s advance curve. This unit features crisp, stamped increments that remain visible even in the tight confines of a Bus engine bay. Don''t gamble with your engine''s longevity by guessing at your timing marks; install this robust timing scale and ensure your VW runs cooler, smoother, and more reliably for miles to come.

PRO TIPS
1. Verify Top Dead Center (TDC) Manually
Before you finalize the installation of your new timing scale, I always recommend verifying that the "0" mark on the scale perfectly aligns with the actual Top Dead Center of the number one piston. Over the years, woodruff keys can wear or aftermarket pulleys may have slightly offset marks. Use a piston stop tool through the spark plug hole to find the physical peak of the piston stroke. If the scale is slightly off due to case variations, you can slightly slot the mounting holes to ensure your reference point is 100% accurate. Precision at this stage prevents mystery overheating issues later on.
2. Enhance Visibility with High-Contrast Paint
While the stamped markings on this scale are high quality, the dark environment of a Bus engine bay can make them hard to see when the engine is spinning at 3,000 RPM. Use a small dab of white acrylic paint or a "paint pen" to fill in the recessed degree marks and the TDC notch on your pulley. Wipe away the excess so the paint only remains in the grooves. This creates a high-contrast visual that "pops" under the flash of a timing light, making it significantly easier to set your total advance accurately without straining your eyes.
3. Check for Scale Clearance and Vibration
When installing the 021-119-249E scale, ensure there is adequate clearance between the scale and the face of the crankshaft pulley. Air-cooled engines expand as they reach operating temperature, and a scale that is mounted too close may rub against the pulley, causing unwanted noise or metal shavings. Additionally, ensure the mounting bolts are torqued properly and consider using a small drop of medium-strength thread locker. A loose timing scale will vibrate, leading to inaccurate readings and potential fatigue cracks in the mounting bracket over time.
