OVERVIEW
In the high-performance world of air-cooled Volkswagens, even the smallest leak can lead to catastrophic engine failure or, at the very least, a messy driveway. The EMPI Thread Sealing Tape (Part #00-9231-0) is an absolute necessity for any serious mechanic, hobbyist, or restorer working on an air-cooled flat-four. Specifically engineered to provide a reliable, airtight, and liquid-tight seal on threaded pipe fittings, this PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) tape is designed to withstand the unique rigors of the VW engine bay. Whether you are installing a new oil pressure sending unit, plumbing an external oil cooler, or setting up a high-volume fuel system for a dual-carburetor array, this tape ensures that your connections remain bone-dry under pressure. Unlike liquid sealants that can be messy and require cure time, this tape offers an immediate, high-strength seal that remains pliable over time, making future disassembly much easier without damaging the delicate aluminum or magnesium threads common in VW components.
The vibration and thermal expansion cycles inherent in air-cooled engines can often cause standard NPT (National Pipe Thread) fittings to weep or loosen over time. EMPI''s thread sealing tape acts as both a lubricant and a sealant, allowing you to reach the proper torque depth without galling the threads while simultaneously filling the microscopic voids between the male and female surfaces. This is particularly critical when dealing with aftermarket oil pumps, full-flow filter headers, and fuel pressure regulators where gasoline or hot oil is constantly pulsing through the lines. Don''t risk your high-dollar engine build on a cheap hardware store substitute; this tape is chemically resistant to petroleum, synthetic oils, and modern ethanol-blended fuels, ensuring that your Beetle, Bus, or Ghia stays on the road and out of the shop. It is the professional''s choice for preventing vacuum leaks in intake manifolds and ensuring that your brake booster connections (on later models) remain perfectly sealed for maximum safety.
FITMENT
While this is a universal sealing component for NPT and tapered pipe fittings, it is specifically recommended for the following Volkswagen applications and custom builds:
- VW Beetle / Bug: All years and models (1946-1979) utilizing aftermarket oil or fuel fittings.
- VW Super Beetle: 1971-1979 models with fuel injection or performance oiling systems.
- VW Karmann Ghia: 1956-1974 models.
- VW Bus / Type 2: 1950-1979 (Splitscreen and Bay Window) including Transporter, Kombi, and Campmobile.
- VW Type 3: 1961-1973 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback) for fuel line and oiling upgrades.
- VW Thing (Type 181): 1973-1974 military-style civilian models.
- Dune Buggies & Sandrails: Essential for all custom chassis builds using air-cooled powerplants and external reservoirs.
- Baja Bugs: Perfect for ruggedized off-road oiling systems and remote filter mounts.

PRO TIPS
1. The Golden Rule of Wrap Direction
One of the most common mistakes is wrapping the tape in the wrong direction. Always wrap the tape in a clockwise direction as you are looking at the end of the male fitting. This ensures that when you screw the fitting into the female port, the rotation of the threads actually tightens the tape onto the fitting rather than unravelling it. If you wrap it counter-clockwise, the tape will bunch up and shred as you tighten the joint, which can lead to immediate leaks and potential contamination of your oil or fuel system.
2. Avoid the First Thread for Safety
When applying EMPI thread tape to an oil pressure sender or a fuel line fitting, always leave the first one or two threads at the tip of the fitting completely bare. By starting your wrap slightly back from the edge, you eliminate the risk of small bits of PTFE tape shearing off during installation and entering the fluid stream. In a VW engine, a tiny piece of tape can easily clog an oil gallery or a carburetor jet, leading to catastrophic bearing failure or a lean-running condition that can melt a piston. Always keep the lead thread clean.
3. Proper Tension and Thickness
Don''t overdo it with the amount of tape you use. For most NPT fittings on a Volkswagen, two to three full wraps with moderate tension are all that is required. You want to pull the tape tight enough that it conforms to the shape of the threads, allowing you to see the "valleys" through the tape. If the tape is applied too thick, it can actually prevent the tapered threads from seating deeply enough to create a mechanical seal, or worse, it can put excessive outward pressure on fragile magnesium engine cases, causing them to crack. Consistency and tension are more important than bulk.
