OVERVIEW
When you are pushing the limits of your air-cooled Volkswagen, the stock Type 1 rear CV joints are often the first point of failure. The EMPI Type 1 to Type 2 Stub Axle Conversion is the definitive solution for enthusiasts looking to significantly increase the strength and durability of their rear drivetrain. By installing these stub axles, you gain the ability to run the much larger and more robust Type 2 (Bus) CV joints on your standard Type 1 IRS trailing arms. This is a critical upgrade for high-horsepower street cars, heavy-duty Baja Bugs, and off-road sand rails that demand more angularity and torque capacity than the original factory equipment can provide. Crafted from high-strength forged Chromoly steel, these stub axles are designed to withstand the brutal shock loads of off-road racing and the high-torque launches of the drag strip without flinching.
Precision is paramount when it comes to drivetrain components, and these EMPI stub axles deliver with meticulous CNC machining that ensures a perfect fit every time. The forged Chromoly construction provides a superior grain structure compared to cast alternatives, offering maximum resistance to snapping or twisting under extreme stress. These axles are designed specifically to accept the 94mm Type 2 CV joint, which utilizes larger internal cages and balls, providing a much wider range of motion. This increased angularity is essential for long-travel suspension setups where the axle must operate at steeper angles without binding. Whether you are building a rugged weekend warrior or a dedicated competition machine, these conversion stub axles provide the peace of mind that comes from knowing your driveline is built to handle whatever terrain you throw at it.
FITMENT
This conversion stub axle is designed for use on Volkswagen Type 1 Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) trailing arms when upgrading to Type 2 (Bus) CV joints. Fits the following applications:

- VW Karmann Ghia: 1969 through 1974
- VW Thing (Type 181): 1973 through 1974
- Dune Buggies & Sand Rails: Any custom chassis utilizing stock or aftermarket Type 1 IRS trailing arms
- Baja Bugs: Ideal for vehicles converted to long-travel rear suspension using Type 1 pivot points

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Never Reuse Old CV Bolts and Always Use Schnorr Washers
When upgrading to the Type 2 CV joint on these stub axles, you must ensure that your hardware is up to the task. We always recommend using brand-new 12.9 grade 8mm CV bolts. Because the larger Type 2 joints handle more torque, the risk of bolts backing out is higher. Always use Schnorr (serrated) safety washers and a small dab of blue thread-locking compound. Torque the 8mm bolts to 25-27 ft-lbs in a cross-pattern. Check them again after your first 50 miles of driving to ensure they haven''t settled or loosened, as a loose CV joint can quickly destroy the threads on your brand-new Chromoly stub axle.
Tip 2: Verify Trailing Arm Clearance for Full Suspension Travel
The Type 2 CV joint is physically larger in diameter (94mm) than the stock Type 1 joint. While these stub axles make the conversion possible, you must check for physical interference between the CV boot/joint and the "pocket" of the trailing arm. In some cases, especially with high-angle off-road setups, you may need to slightly "clearance" or notch the trailing arm to prevent the CV joint from rubbing at full droop or full compression. Always cycle your suspension through its full range of motion without the spring plates attached to ensure there is no binding or contact before you head out for a test drive.
Tip 3: Use High-Quality Moly Grease and Proper Boot Sealing
A CV joint is only as good as its lubrication. When installing your Type 2 joints onto these conversion stub axles, use a high-content Molybdenum Disulfide (Moly) grease specifically designed for high-performance CV joints. Do not overfill the boot, as excessive grease can cause heat buildup and premature boot failure; instead, focus on thoroughly packing the cage and bearings. Additionally, ensure the mating surface of the stub axle is perfectly clean and dry before sliding the joint on. Use high-quality stainless steel ear-type clamps for the boots to prevent grease from spraying out and dirt from getting in, which is the leading cause of joint failure in off-road environments.
