OVERVIEW
When you are building a custom air-cooled rig, whether it is a high-performance sand rail, a rugged baja bug, or a custom street rod, the steering system is your direct link to the machine. This 5-foot chrome steering shaft from Latest Rage is engineered to provide the ultimate combination of durability and show-quality finish. Constructed from heavy-duty 7/8-inch diameter steel with a robust .120 wall thickness, this shaft is designed to withstand the extreme stresses of off-road terrain while maintaining precise, flex-free control. The brilliant chrome plating not only protects the steel from the elements but also adds that professional, mirror-like finish to your cockpit that every serious builder strives for when detailing a project.
Versatility is the core strength of this component. At 59 inches in length, it offers more than enough material for even the most complex steering geometries, allowing you to cut, trim, and fit it exactly to your specific chassis requirements. The integrated 3-bolt flange is a industry standard, making it compatible with a massive variety of aftermarket steering wheels and quick-release hubs. If you are running a different bolt pattern, this shaft serves as the perfect foundation for various steering wheel adapters. By choosing this chrome-plated shaft from Appletree Automotive, you are ensuring that your steering assembly is not just a functional necessity, but a highlight of your build that delivers reliable performance mile after mile, whether you are carving through dunes or cruising the local strip.

PRO TIPS
1. Precision Cutting and Deburring
Since this shaft comes in a generous 5-foot length, you will almost certainly need to trim it to fit your specific cockpit dimensions. Always measure twice and cut once using a high-speed chop saw with a metal-cutting blade or a heavy-duty pipe cutter for a perfectly square end. After cutting, it is vital to deburr the inner and outer edges with a file or a deburring tool. This ensures that your U-joints, couplers, or support bearings slide on smoothly without scratching the chrome or creating stress risers in the metal.
2. Proper Support and Geometry
Because of the 7/8-inch diameter and the potential length of the steering column, it is imperative to use at least one (and often two) support bearings or Heim joints along the length of the shaft. This prevents the shaft from "whipping" or bowing under heavy steering loads, especially in off-road environments where kickback is common. Ensure that your steering shaft is perfectly aligned with your steering box or rack-and-pinion to prevent binding. If you are using U-joints, make sure they are "in phase" to provide a smooth, consistent rotation through the steering wheel.
3. Protecting the Chrome Finish
To keep your steering shaft looking show-room ready, avoid using harsh abrasive cleaners that can micro-scratch the chrome surface. A simple microfiber cloth and a high-quality chrome polish are all you need for maintenance. If you are performing any welding on the chassis near the installed shaft, always cover the chrome with a welding blanket or heavy-duty leather. Weld spatter will permanently pit the chrome finish, leading to rust spots later on. If you must weld a coupler to the bottom of the shaft, wrap the rest of the shaft in a damp rag to act as a heat sink and protect the plating from heat-induced discoloration.
