OVERVIEW
When you''re behind the wheel of a classic Volkswagen or a custom-built sand rail, the connection between your hands and the tires is the most critical feedback loop in the vehicle. The EMPI Steering Box and Shaft Coupler is engineered to restore that factory-fresh precision while providing the rugged durability required for modern driving conditions. Whether you are navigating tight city corners in a restored 1967 Beetle or tackling aggressive dunes in a custom buggy, this coupler ensures that every input is translated directly to the steering box without the slop or "dead zone" often found in aged, original components. By utilizing high-grade materials and precision-machined splines, this component acts as the foundational link in your steering geometry, providing peace of mind and significantly improved handling characteristics.
This coupler is specifically designed to interface perfectly with the O.E. VW splines found on stock steering boxes, making it an essential part for builders who are upgrading their steering shafts or replacing worn-out factory hardware. It is constructed to withstand the high-torque demands of off-road use while maintaining the tight tolerances necessary for a smooth, predictable street ride. The design allows for the use of a urethane or rubber steering coupler disc between the two halves, which helps dampen road vibrations and provides the necessary flex to prevent binding in the steering column. If you are tired of chasing your steering across the lane or feeling every pebble through the wheel, upgrading to this EMPI component is a vital step in modernizing your air-cooled VW''s front end and ensuring long-term reliability.

PRO TIPS
1. Ensure Proper Spline Engagement and Pinch Bolt Torque
When installing the coupler onto the steering box input shaft, it is absolutely vital to ensure the splines are fully seated and clean of any debris or old grease. Slide the coupler on until it bottoms out or reaches the designated groove on the shaft. Always use a high-quality Grade 8 pinch bolt and lock nut. Tighten the bolt to the manufacturer''s torque specification to ensure there is no movement between the coupler and the box. Even a tiny amount of wiggle will eventually round out the splines, leading to a dangerous loss of steering control over time. Double-check this bolt after your first 50 miles of driving.
2. The Importance of the Steering Coupler Disc
This metal flange is designed to work in conjunction with a rubber or urethane steering coupler disc (often called a "rag joint"). While many off-roaders prefer urethane for its stiffness and durability, street drivers may prefer a high-quality rubber disc to better isolate road vibrations. Regardless of the material, never bolt the two metal halves of the steering system directly together without this disc. The disc allows for slight angular misalignment between the steering column and the gearbox, which is common even in perfectly straight builds. Without the disc, you risk putting immense stress on the steering box bearings and the steering column bushings.
3. Grounding Your Horn Circuit
One of the most common headaches after a steering rebuild is a horn that no longer works. In many stock VW configurations, the steering column uses the coupler as part of the ground circuit for the horn. Because the rubber or ure
