The EMPI Sideflow Exhaust System (Part #00-3450-0) is a premium upgrade for the 1963-1967 Volkswagen Split Window Bus. Designed specifically for 1500cc and 1600cc engines, this system utilizes 1-1/2 inch tubing and a true 4-into-1 merged collector to significantly improve exhaust scavenging and engine efficiency. The header is TIG welded for superior strength and features extra-thick mounting flanges to ensure a flat, reliable sealing surface against the cylinder heads. The kit comes complete with a quiet muffler featuring a polished stainless steel tip, gaskets, and all necessary installation hardware.

Fitment and Configuration

This exhaust is engineered for the 1963 to 1967 VW Type 2 Bus. It is important to note that this system is supplied in a raw steel finish and is designed for performance applications where factory heater boxes are no longer used. It is not compatible with heater boxes and requires the use of J-tubes for installation.

Pro Tech Tips

Coat Before You Install: This system arrives in raw steel with a thin coat of shipping oil to prevent rust during transit. For long-term durability, you must thoroughly clean the metal and apply a high-quality ceramic coating or high-temperature header paint before the first heat cycle to prevent corrosion.

Heater Box Delete: Since this system cannot be used with heater boxes, ensure you have a set of 1-1/2" J-tubes ready for the install. Additionally, remember to plug or block off the fresh air ports on your fan shroud to maintain proper air pressure and cooling over your cylinders.

Ensure a Leak-Free Seal: While the thick flanges provide an excellent mating surface, older cylinder heads may have slight imperfections. Use the included high-quality gaskets, and for added insurance, apply a thin bead of high-temp copper RTV silicone to both sides of the gasket to ensure there are no exhaust leaks that could cause popping or lean conditions.
