OVERVIEW
Upgrade your vintage Volkswagen''s handling and steering response with the Appletree Automotive Rack and Pinion Steering Kit, specifically engineered for King Pin beam front ends. For decades, the traditional worm-and-roller steering box was the standard for air-cooled VWs, but as performance demands increaseespecially in the world of off-road racing, sand rails, and high-performance Baja Bugsthe need for a more precise and reliable system becomes apparent. This kit eliminates the "slop" and dead spots commonly associated with aging steering boxes, providing a direct, mechanical connection between the driver and the terrain. Whether you are navigating tight technical trails in a dune buggy or looking for more predictable steering on a custom street project, this rack and pinion conversion delivers a modern feel that transforms the entire driving experience.
This comprehensive kit is built to withstand the rigors of harsh environments while maintaining a show-quality appearance. Featuring a high-luster 14-inch chrome rack and pinion, a heavy-duty chrome rack mount, and two robust tie rods, this package provides the core components necessary to modernize your front end. The rack and pinion design offers a significant weight savings over the bulky stock steering box and pitman arm assembly, which is crucial for front-end agility. Please note that because these components are manufactured to provide a tight, vibration-free tolerance, the rack housing may require a slight amount of sanding or "dressing" to seat perfectly within the chrome mount. This attention to detail ensures that once installed, your steering remains rock-solid under the most demanding conditions.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Achieving the Perfect Fitment
As noted in the product description, the chrome plating on the rack housing and the interior of the mount can sometimes create a very tight interference fit. Before you attempt to bolt the assembly to your beam, use a fine-grit sandpaper (around 400 grit) to lightly dress the mounting surface of the rack housing. You don''t want to remove the metal, just smooth out any high spots in the chrome. This ensures the rack sits square in the mount, preventing any binding of the internal pinion gear when the mounting bolts are torqued down. A small amount of anti-seize on the mounting surface can also help prevent "galling" during the installation process.
Tip 2: Managing Bump Steer and Geometry
When switching from a steering box to a rack and pinion, the vertical placement of the rack is critical to minimizing "bump steer"the tendency of the wheels to turn themselves as the suspension travels up and down. Ideally, you want your tie rods to be as parallel to your trailing arms as possible at ride height. When welding or clamping your mount to the beam, take the time to cycle the suspension through its full range of motion without the shocks installed. If you notice the wheels toeing in or out significantly as the suspension compresses, you may need to rotate the rack mount slightly on the beam tubes to find the "sweet spot" where steering geometry remains stable.
Tip 3: Steering Shaft Alignment and U-Joints
Because the input shaft on a rack and pinion is at a different angle and location than the original steering box, you will need to fabricate or install a custom steering shaft using high-quality U-joints. Never attempt to force a steering shaft into a sharp angle; this will cause "notchy" steering and premature wear on the pinion bearings. We recommend using a double U-joint setup with a support bearing if the angle exceeds 30 degrees. Always ensure that your U-joints are "in phase" (yokes aligned) to prevent cyclic vibrations in the steering wheel. Proper alignment here is the difference between a professional-feeling setup and one that feels dangerous on the road.
