OVERVIEW
When you are building a high-performance off-road machine, steering precision isn''t just a luxuryit''s a necessity for survival and performance on the trail. The Latest Rage End Load Rack and Pinion is engineered to withstand the brutal punishment of desert racing, rock crawling, and aggressive trail riding while providing the surgical steering response that air-cooled enthusiasts demand. This unit stands out with its heavy-duty construction, featuring a polished body that doesn''t just look incredible on a show-quality sand rail but also offers superior resistance to the elements. Unlike standard center-load racks, this end-load design is specifically favored for custom front-end builds where tie-rod geometry and suspension travel are the top priorities. It provides a robust mechanical link between the driver and the terrain, ensuring that every input is translated directly to the dirt.
What truly sets this rack apart is the sheer beefiness of the internal and external components. We are talking about giant steel clevises that provide a rock-solid mounting point for your tie rods, ensuring that even under the high-torque loads of oversized off-road tires or high-speed impacts, your steering remains true and unyielding. The 5/8-inch 36-spline input shaft is the industry standard for strength, allowing for a secure, slip-free connection to your steering column via a heavy-duty U-joint. Whether you are navigating tight technical trails in the woods or pinning the throttle across open dunes, this rack and pinion provides the mechanical advantage and durability required to keep your front wheels pointed exactly where you want them. It is a professional-grade upgrade for any Volkswagen-based project that demands more than what a stock steering box can offer.

PRO TIPS
1. Mastering Bump Steer and Tie-Rod Geometry
When installing an end-load rack like this, the most critical factor for handling is minimizing bump steer. You want your tie rods to be as close to the same angle as your trailing arms or control arms as possible. Because the tie rods pivot from the ends of this rack, you have a unique opportunity to fine-tune the arc of the steering. Always cycle your suspension from full compression to full extension without the shocks installed to ensure the wheels stay pointed straight throughout the travel. If the wheels "toe-in" or "toe-out" as the suspension moves, you may need to adjust the vertical mounting height of the rack or the height of the tie-rod ends at the spindle.
2. Securing the Spline and U-Joint Connection
The 5/8-inch 36-spline input is extremely strong, but it is only as good as the U-joint or coupler you attach to it. When installing your steering shaft, ensure that the U-joint is fully seated onto the splines. We recommend using a high-quality set-screw or pinch-bolt style U-joint. Always "dimple" the splined shaft where the set screw lands to prevent the shaft from ever sliding out of the joint. For added safety, many builders use a secondary safety collar on the steering shaft. Never weld directly to the rack''s input shaft, as the heat can damage the internal seals and the integrity of the hardened steel.
3. Maintenance for Longevity in Harsh Environments
Off-road environments are brutal on moving parts. While this rack is designed for the dirt, it is not "set it and forget it." Regularly inspect the steel clevises for any signs of stress or bending after a hard weekend of jumping or rock bashing. Additionally, because the rack uses a rack-and-pinion gear set, keeping the internals lubricated is key. If your rack features a grease zerk, use a high-quality lithium-based grease. If it is a sealed unit, ensure the boots (if used in your custom application) are free of tears. Keeping grit and sand out of the gear mesh will prevent premature "slop" or play in the steering wheel, keeping your feedback crisp for years to come.
