OVERVIEW
When you''re pushing the limits of a high-performance air-cooled engine, the connecting rods are the literal backbone of your rotating assembly. The EMPI Pro-Series I-Beam Rods are engineered specifically for the builder who demands more than just a stock replacement. Forged from high-tensile 4340 Chromoly steel, these rods provide the structural integrity required to handle the violent cylinder pressures associated with high-boost turbocharging, nitrous oxide injection, and high-RPM naturally aspirated screaming sessions. The I-Beam design is favored by many master engine builders for its incredible strength-to-weight ratio, ensuring that you have the reciprocating mass minimized without sacrificing the rigidity needed to keep your bearings perfectly round under extreme loads. Whether you''re building a weekend warrior for the drag strip or a rugged long-travel sand rail, these 5.400-inch rods offer the precision and durability that Appletree Auto customers have relied on for decades.
One of the most significant advantages of the EMPI Pro-Series line is the attention to detail regarding engine case fitment. These rods feature clearanced caps, which are specifically profiled to reduce the amount of internal case clearancing required during assembly. This is a massive time-saver for builders working with stroker clearanced cases or when trying to fit a larger crank into a standard magnesium or aluminum case. To ensure the bottom end stays together when the tachometer climbs, these rods come standard with genuine ARP 2000 5/16-inch rod bolts. These fasteners are the gold standard in the racing industry, offering superior fatigue life and much higher tensile strength than standard hardware. By choosing these Chevy journal rods, you are opting for a setup that allows for a wider variety of high-performance crankshaft options, providing a robust foundation for any serious Type 1 based engine build.
FITMENT
These rods are designed for high-performance VW Type 1 based engines utilizing a Chevy 2.0-inch journal crankshaft. They are compatible with the following models when equipped with the appropriate aftermarket stroker or performance crankshaft:
- Volkswagen Beetle: 1954 through 1977 (Sedan and Convertible)
- Volkswagen Super Beetle: 1971 through 1979
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1956 through 1974
- Volkswagen Bus / Type 2: 1954 through 1971 (With Type 1 based engine configurations)
- Volkswagen Type 3: 1961 through 1973 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback)
- Volkswagen Thing: 1973 through 1974
- Custom Applications: Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, Meyers Manx, and Trikes using VW Type 1 upright engine cases.

PRO TIPS
1. Prioritize Bolt Stretch Over Torque Values
While EMPI and ARP provide torque specifications for these 5/16-inch bolts, the most accurate way to ensure proper clamping force is by measuring bolt stretch. Using a high-quality rod bolt stretch gauge allows you to account for friction variables that a torque wrench cannot detect. Always apply the included ARP Ultra-Torque assembly lubricant to the threads and the underside of the bolt head to ensure a consistent reading. If you don''t have a stretch gauge, ensure your torque wrench is recently calibrated and perform the tightening sequence in three equal steps to prevent uneven loading on the rod cap.
2. Verify Cam-to-Rod Clearances
Even though these Pro-Series rods feature clearanced caps to help with case fitment, it is absolutely critical to check the clearance between the connecting rod and the camshaft lobes. In many stroker applications, especially when using high-lift camshafts with large base circles, the rod cap can come dangerously close to the cam. We recommend a minimum clearance of .040 inches to .060 inches. If clearance is tight, you may need to use a small-base-circle camshaft or carefully remove a small amount of material from the rod cap (consult a professional machinist before doing so) to ensure the engine doesn''t self-destruct upon its first rotation.
3. Check Bearing Tang Alignment
When installing your Chevy-journal bearings into these rods, pay close attention to the tang (or notch) alignment. Because these are performance rods using a Chevy journal size, you must ensure you are using the correct matching bearing set designed for this specific rod. Before final assembly, perform a "dry fit" without oil to check the bearing crush. Once satisfied, use a high-quality assembly lube on the bearing surfaces but keep the "back" of the bearing and the rod bore completely clean and dry. This ensures the bearing stays seated and doesn''t spin under the high-stress conditions of a performance Volkswagen engine.
