OVERVIEW
When it comes to maintaining the precise handling and rear-end stability of your air-cooled Volkswagen, the IRS trailing arm pivot bushings are a critical yet often overlooked component. Over decades of service, original factory rubber bushings perish, crack, and soften, leading to "ghost steering" where the rear of the vehicle feels like it is wandering independently of your input. These BUGPACK Pro-thane high-performance bushings are engineered to eliminate that unwanted deflection, providing a much firmer connection between the trailing arm and the chassis. By upgrading to these polyurethane units, you ensure that your rear suspension geometry remains consistent under load, whether you are carving corners on a canyon road or navigating rugged terrain in a custom off-road rail. The result is a more predictable, responsive driving experience that restores the tight feel your VW had when it first rolled off the assembly line.
Crafted by BUGPACK using premium Pro-thane material, these bushings are designed to outperform and outlast traditional rubber alternatives. Unlike rubber, which is susceptible to degradation from oil, road salt, and UV exposure, these polyurethane bushings are virtually indestructible in normal operating conditions. Each kit includes two high-density bushings and two precision-machined steel liners that serve as the inner pivot sleeve, ensuring a smooth rotation without the binding often associated with inferior aftermarket parts. These are designed to tap directly into the pivot area of your 1968 through 1976 IRS trailing arms, making them a straightforward but high-impact upgrade for any restoration or performance build. If you are tired of the sloppy handling and clunking sounds coming from your rear suspension, these BUGPACK bushings are the definitive solution for a long-lasting, high-performance repair.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Lubrication is Essential
To prevent the annoying squeaking often associated with polyurethane bushings, you must use a high-quality silicone-based or synthetic waterproof grease during installation. Apply a generous coating of grease to the outer surface of the bushing before tapping it into the trailing arm, and more importantly, grease the inner bore of the bushing and the outer surface of the steel liner. This ensures that the liner can rotate freely within the polyurethane without creating friction-induced noise or premature wear. Don''t use petroleum-based grease, as it can eventually break down certain synthetic materials; stick to the specialized grease often supplied or recommended for Pro-thane components.
2. Clean the Pivot Pocket Thoroughly
Before attempting to install your new BUGPACK bushings, it is imperative that you remove all traces of the old rubber bushing and any corrosion from the trailing arm''s pivot pocket. Often, the outer metal shell of the original rubber bushing will remain stuck in the arm. You may need to carefully use a hacksaw or a chisel to "score" the old shell and pop it out. Once the pocket is empty, use a wire brush or sandpaper to clean the inner diameter until it is smooth. A clean, burr-free surface ensures the new polyurethane bushing seats perfectly and prevents it from being damaged or distorted during the "tap-in" process.
3. Re-Check Your Rear Alignment
Because these bushings are significantly firmer than the worn-out rubber units they replace, they will often slightly alter the resting position of your trailing arms. This change, combined with the removal and re-installation of the trailing arm bolts, can shift your rear toe and camber settings. After you have completed the installation and taken the car for a short test drive to settle the suspension, we highly recommend performing a professional rear-end alignment. Proper alignment is the only way to ensure that your new-found handling performance doesn''t come at the cost of premature tire wear or erratic high-speed tracking.
