OVERVIEW
Precision fuel management is the backbone of any high-performance air-cooled engine, and the EMPI IDF and HPMX Needle and Seat assembly is a critical component in achieving that perfect balance. Designed specifically for the iconic Weber IDF series and its high-quality counterpart, the EMPI HPMX, this 1.50mm needle and seat ensures that your carburetor''s float bowl maintains a consistent fuel level even under demanding driving conditions. Whether you are cruising the coastline in a vintage Type 1 Beetle or pushing the limits in an off-road sand rail, a worn or sticking needle and seat can lead to erratic idling, poor throttle response, and dangerous fuel flooding. By replacing your aging components with this precision-machined assembly, you are investing in the reliability and longevity of your fuel system, ensuring that your engine receives the exact amount of fuel it needs without the risk of overflow or starvation.
The 1.50mm orifice size is an industry-standard choice for many street and mild performance applications, providing an ideal flow rate for engines that require steady fuel delivery without the excessive volume that can sometimes overwhelm smaller float systems. This genuine EMPI replacement part is manufactured to exacting tolerances, featuring a high-quality needle that creates a leak-proof seal against the seat when the float reaches its designated height. It is common for older needle and seat assemblies to develop small grooves or debris-related damage over time, which prevents them from sealing properly and causes the carburetor to "dribble" fuel into the intake. Installing a fresh EMPI 79511.150 assembly is one of the most cost-effective ways to tune up your dual-carburetor setup and restore the crisp, responsive performance that Weber and HPMX carburetors are famous for in the Volkswagen community.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Always Verify Your Float Level After Installation
Whenever you replace a needle and seat, it is absolutely vital to re-check and reset your float levels. Even though the EMPI 1.50mm assembly is built to factory specifications, slight variations in the needle height or the thickness of the sealing washer can change the point at which the float shuts off the fuel flow. Use a precision depth gauge or a dedicated Weber float level tool to ensure your floats are set to the correct millimeter spec (usually 10mm for the closed position on many IDF applications). If the float is set too high, you will experience flooding and "percolation" after the engine is shut off; if it is too low, you may experience a lean stumble during high-speed cornering or heavy acceleration.
Tip 2: Regulate Your Fuel Pressure for Maximum Life
Weber IDF and EMPI HPMX carburetors are notoriously sensitive to fuel pressure. These needle and seat assemblies are designed to work best at a consistent pressure of 2.5 to 3.0 PSI. If you are running a high-volume electric fuel pump without a regulator, you risk "blowing past" the needle and seat, which forces fuel into the bowl even when the needle is technically closed. This leads to internal leaking and poor tuning. To protect your new 1.50mm needle and seat and ensure a steady idle, always install a high-quality fuel pressure regulator and a gauge to verify that you are not exceeding the 3.5 PSI maximum threshold.
Tip 3: Flush the Fuel Lines Before Final Connection
One of the most common causes of immediate failure for a new needle and seat is microscopic debris trapped in the fuel line. When you disconnect your fuel rails or hoses to perform the replacement, small bits of rubber or dirt can enter the system. Before you hook the fuel line back up to the carburetor inlet, place the end of the hose into a container and crank the engine (or turn on the electric pump) for a few seconds to flush out any contaminants. A single speck of dirt caught between the new needle and the seat will prevent it from sealing, causing your freshly rebuilt carburetor to flood immediately. Always use a high-quality 10-micron fuel filter between the pump and the carburetors to keep the seat orifice clear.
