1. Gravity is Your Friend: Mount it Low

Electric fuel pumps are designed to be "pushers," not "pullers." 2. Safety First: Use a Relay and Safety Switch

Never wire an electric fuel pump directly to your ignition switch. Furthermore, we strongly recommend installing a Holley Safety Shut-off Switch (Part #12-810). This switch senses oil pressure; if your engine stalls or you are involved in an accident where the engine stops, the switch will automatically cut power to the fuel pump. Without this, the pump could continue to spray fuel in a crash as long as the ignition is on, creating a massive fire hazard.

3. Filtration and Port Sealing

To protect the precision rotor and vane mechanism inside the Holley Red, you must run a high-quality pre-filter (100 micron) between the tank and the pump. This catches tank scale or debris before it can jam the pump. When installing your 3/8 NPT fittings into the pump housing, use a dedicated fuel-rated thread sealant paste rather than Teflon tape. Bits of Teflon tape can easily shred off during installation, find their way into the pump vanes or your carburetor needles, and cause immediate performance issues. Double-check that your fuel lines are at least 5/16" or 3/8" to ensure you aren''t restricting the high-volume flow this pump is capable of delivering.
