Tip 1: Precision Alignment. To ensure your engine tin bolts up perfectly, do not weld the tabs onto the heater box or J-tube blindly. Instead, bolt the tab to the engine tin first. Position the tin exactly where it needs to be, then apply a tack weld to the tab. This ensures the bolt holes line up perfectly during final assembly.

Tip 2: Clean Metal for Strong Welds. Since these tabs are raw steel and often welded to exhaust components, surface preparation is critical. Use a wire wheel or flap disc to grind the mounting area on the heater box down to bare, shiny metal. Removing all old paint and carbon buildup is the only way to ensure a structural weld that won't crack under engine vibration.

Tip 3: Heat-Resistant Coating. After welding is complete and the metal has cooled, immediately coat the tabs and the weld area with a high-quality, high-temperature header paint or ceramic coating. Because these tabs are located in a high-heat, high-moisture area under the car, raw steel will begin to surface rust within days if not properly protected.
