OVERVIEW
When it comes to restoring the iconic silhouette of a late-model Bug, the front apron is a critical component that often demands replacement due to decades of road debris, moisture accumulation, and front-end impacts. This EMPI Front Apron for the 1968 through 1977 Volkswagen Beetle is engineered to provide a precise foundation for your restoration project. As a structural and aesthetic anchor for the front of your vehicle, this panel ensures that your fenders, hood, and bumper brackets align perfectly, restoring that factory-fresh look that every air-cooled enthusiast craves. Whether you are dealing with the common "Swiss cheese" rust holes behind the bumper or repairing collision damage, this stamped steel panel offers the structural integrity and correct contours required for a professional-grade finish.
At Appletree Automotive, we understand that a body panel is more than just a piece of metal; it is the canvas for your paint job. This front apron arrives in a storage primer designed to protect the steel during transit and shelving. It is important to note that this is an unfinished body component intended for professional installation. Like all high-quality replacement sheet metal, it will require typical bodywork preparation, including light sanding, priming, and block-sanding to ensure a mirror-smooth finish once the final topcoat is applied. By choosing this EMPI replacement, you are ensuring that your Type 1 maintains its classic lines while providing a solid mounting point for the hood latch and bumper assemblies, ensuring safety and style go hand-in-hand.

PRO TIPS
1. Master the Mock-Up Before Final Welding
Never fully weld a new front apron into place without a complete "mock-up" of your front-end components. We highly recommend temporarily bolting on your fenders and installing the hood with the latch mechanism before you lay down your final beads. This allows you to verify the "smile" gap between the hood and the apron. If the apron is tilted even a fraction of an inch, your hood might not latch correctly or the fender lines will look "off." Use Cleco fasteners or sheet metal screws to hold everything in place, check your body lines twice, and only then proceed with your plug or tack welds.
2. Proper Surface Prep is Non-Negotiable
The black coating found on these panels is a "shipping primer" or "storage primer," meant to prevent flash rust while the part is in the warehouse. It is NOT a high-quality paint base. For a restoration that lasts, you should scuff this primer back with a red scotch-brite pad or 220-grit sandpaper. If you want the absolute best adhesion, many pros prefer to strip the storage primer entirely and apply a high-quality epoxy primer. Don''t forget to apply a generous amount of seam sealer to the joints where the apron meets the inner wheel wells to prevent moisture from creeping into the welds and causing premature rot.
3. Don''t Neglect the Hidden Side
While everyone focuses on the exterior paint, the backside of the front apron (the side facing the spare tire well) is where rust usually starts. Once the apron is welded in, it can be difficult to reach every nook and cranny. Before installation, consider spraying the interior side with a weld-through primer, and once the job is finished, apply a robust undercoating or cavity wax. Protecting the "blind" side of the metal from road salt and condensation is the secret to making sure you don''t have to do this job again ten years down the road. Always ensure your drain holes are clear so water doesn''t trap behind the panel.
