OVERVIEW
When it comes to extracting maximum power from your air-cooled Volkswagen, the Engle FK-43 Camshaft stands as a premier choice for serious street and strip enthusiasts. Engineered for those who demand aggressive performance without sacrificing the legendary reliability of a billet steel core, the FK-43 is part of Engle''s specialized FK series. Unlike the standard W-series grinds, the FK series is specifically profiled to be used with high-ratio rockers, typically 1.4:1 or 1.5:1. This allows for a massive .536 inches of lift at the valve, providing the high-flow characteristics necessary to feed large-displacement Type 1 engines. Whether you are building a weekend bracket racer or a high-performance street terror, this camshaft delivers a violent mid-range punch and an impressive top-end pull that will leave the competition in the rearview mirror.
The Engle E6043 isn''t just about raw numbers; it''s about the precision of American manufacturing and decades of racing heritage. With a 281-degree advertised duration and a 108-degree lobe center, this cam provides the perfect balance for high-RPM breathing while maintaining enough vacuum for manageable idling in a performance-oriented setup. To achieve the best results, this camshaft must be paired with high-quality dual valve springs and chromoly pushrods to handle the aggressive ramp rates. Because it is a 3-bolt style cam, it requires a bolt-on cam gear, giving you the security of a mechanical connection that won''t shear under the stress of high-lift operation. When you choose Engle from Appletree Automotive, you are investing in a component that has defined VW performance for generations.

PRO TIPS
1. Prioritize Proper Cam Break-In
The first 20 minutes of your engine''s life are the most critical for the Engle FK-43. Always use a high-quality break-in oil with high ZDDP (zinc) content. Before firing the engine, ensure the lifters are coated in a high-pressure assembly lube. Once started, immediately bring the engine to 2,0002,500 RPM and vary the speed slightly for 20 minutes. Never let a new flat-tappet camshaft idle during break-in, as the splash lubrication from the crank is insufficient at low RPMs to protect the cam lobes and lifter faces from galling.
2. Dial In Your Valve Train Geometry
With a high-lift cam like the FK-43, standard "bolt-on and go" mentalities don''t apply. You must use adjustable pushrod tubes and custom-length chromoly pushrods to achieve perfect valve train geometry. When using 1.4:1 rockers, ensure that at half-lift, the rocker arm adjustment screw is in a straight line with the pushrod. Improper geometry with .536 inches of lift will lead to accelerated guide wear, broken valve stems, or dropped valves. Always check for coil bind and ensure there is at least .060 inches of clearance between the retainer and the valve stem seal at full lift.
3. Match Your Components for Maximum Flow
The FK-43 is a "big" cam that requires supporting modifications to truly shine. It is highly recommended to pair this camshaft with ported and polished cylinder heads featuring at least 40mm intake and 35.5mm exhaust valves. Additionally, dual carburetors (such as Weber 44 or 48 IDFs) and a high-flow merged exhaust system (1-5/8 inch or 1-3/4 inch) are necessary to move the volume of air this cam is capable of processing. If you try to run this cam with a restrictive stock-style intake or exhaust, you will lose the performance benefits while retaining the aggressive idle, resulting in a poor-running engine.
