This EMPI exhaust system is precision-engineered for the Volkswagen Type 2 Bus, covering model years 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, and 1971. It is designed for 1300cc to 1600cc upright air-cooled engines. The header features 1 3/8-inch tubing with a small 3-bolt muffler flange positioned at the 1:00 o'clock location.

Professional Technical Tips

Strip the Shipping Paint: The black coating found on this exhaust system is a temporary "storage paint" intended only to prevent rust during transit and warehousing. It is not heat-resistant and will burn off quickly, often producing smoke and an unpleasant odor. For the best results, strip this coating and apply a high-quality, high-temperature header paint or ceramic coating before installation.

Ensure a Leak-Free Seal: To prevent annoying exhaust leaks at the 3-bolt flange, ensure both surfaces are perfectly clean and flat. While the kit includes an installation gasket, applying a thin bead of high-temp copper RTV silicone to both sides of the gasket can provide an extra layer of protection against "exhaust puffing" at the connection point.

Verify Rear Apron Clearance: When installing on 1963-1971 Buses, always test-fit the muffler and the flared chrome tip before final tightening of the header nuts. Because these vehicles often have aftermarket rear aprons or body repairs, you may need to slightly adjust the hanger brackets to ensure the chrome tip does not vibrate against the body or melt the paint on your rear apron.
