This EMPI precision-designed exhaust system is engineered for air-cooled Volkswagen engines. It features 1 3/8-inch tubing and a small 3-bolt muffler flange positioned at the 1:00 o'clock location. Verified fitment includes:

• VW Beetle (Type 1): 1966-1973 (1300cc - 1600cc)
• VW Karmann Ghia: 1966-1973 (1300cc - 1600cc)
• VW Bus (Type 2): 1963-1971

Pro Tech Tips for Installation

Strip the Storage Paint: The black coating found on this exhaust system is strictly for rust prevention during shipping and storage. It is not a finished high-heat paint. For a long-lasting finish, sand off this shipping paint and apply a quality high-temperature header paint or ceramic coating before installation to prevent premature surface rust.

Ensure a Leak-Free Flange Seal: When mounting the glass pack muffler to the header, always use a fresh 3-bolt gasket. For an extra layer of protection against exhaust leaks, apply a thin bead of high-temp copper RTV silicone to both sides of the gasket. Tighten the bolts in an even pattern to ensure the flange seats perfectly flat.

Verify Heat Riser Functionality: This kit includes aluminum flex hoses for your heat risers. During installation, ensure these are securely clamped and that your intake manifold heat riser tubes are clear of carbon buildup. Proper exhaust flow through these tubes is essential for preventing carburetor icing and ensuring smooth engine performance in cooler weather.
