This EMPI exhaust system is specifically engineered for Volkswagen Type 2 (Bus) and Type 4 (411/412) models manufactured between 1972 and 1974. It is compatible with 1700cc, 1800cc, and 2000cc engines. The system features 1-1/2 inch tubing and includes a fully internally welded quiet muffler, gaskets, and necessary installation hardware.

Prep the Raw Finish: This exhaust system arrives with a thin layer of black storage paint intended only to prevent rust during transit and storage. This paint will chip, scratch, and burn off quickly once the engine reaches operating temperature. For a long-lasting and professional look, we recommend sanding off the storage paint and applying a high-quality, high-temperature header paint or ceramic coating before installation.

Use Anti-Seize on Hardware: Because Type 4 engines run at high temperatures, exhaust hardware is prone to seizing over time. When installing the included bolts and nuts, apply a small amount of copper-based anti-seize to the threads. This ensures that if you ever need to remove the system for engine service, the hardware will break loose without snapping the studs.

Re-Torque After Heat Cycles: New exhaust gaskets will compress after the first few heat cycles. After installing the system and running the engine to operating temperature, let it cool down completely and re-check the torque on all flange nuts and bolts. This prevents exhaust leaks that can lead to "popping" sounds or damage to the exhaust valves.
