OVERVIEW
The Zenith 32NDIX is a legendary dual-barrel downdraft carburetor that has earned its place in the history of high-performance air-cooled engines. Originally found as standard equipment on early Porsche 356 models and various industrial or military applications, these carburetors are prized for their reliability and tuneability. However, decades of heat cycles and exposure to modern fuel blends can take a heavy toll on internal seals and gaskets. This EMPI Minor Rebuild Kit is the professional solution for enthusiasts looking to restore crisp throttle response and eliminate dangerous fuel leaks without the expense of a total overhaul. When your engine starts to suffer from "flat spots" during acceleration or you notice fuel weeping from the body gaskets, it is a clear sign that your Zenith units need the precision refresh that only high-quality components can provide.
At Appletree Auto, we know that a carburetor is only as good as the seals holding it together. This kit is specifically curated to include the high-wear items required for a standard "clean and reseal" service. It features a precision-machined needle and seat assembly to ensure your float levels remain consistent, preventing the flooding or leaning out that can lead to engine damage. The gaskets included are manufactured from modern materials designed to withstand the aggressive chemical additives and ethanol content found in today''s pump gas, ensuring a long-lasting seal that won''t shrink or degrade. By choosing this EMPI kit, you are investing in the longevity of your vintage fuel system, ensuring your classic Porsche or performance VW continues to roar to life with every turn of the key.

PRO TIPS
1. Cleanliness is Next to Godliness
Before you even crack open the carburetor body, ensure the exterior is completely free of grease and road grime. Once disassembled, we highly recommend using an ultrasonic cleaner or a dedicated carburetor dipping solvent for the metal bodies. Pay special attention to the small transition ports and the idle circuit passages; even a microscopic speck of debris can cause a localized lean condition that makes the engine stumble. After soaking, use compressed air to blow through every single passage to ensure they are 100% clear. Never use a metal wire to poke through jets, as you can easily gouge the soft brass and ruin the calibration of the carburetor.
2. Dry-Set Your Float Levels
While the kit includes a new needle and seat, your float level must be checked and adjusted manually to ensure proper operation. A float that is set too high will cause fuel to "drip" from the boosters at idle, leading to a rich condition and hard hot-restarting. Conversely, a float set too low will cause the engine to starve for fuel at high RPMs. When installing the new needle and seat from this kit, use a precision caliper to measure the distance from the gasket surface to the float. Always check the float for "heaviness" by submerging it in a safe container of fuel; if bubbles appear or if it doesn''t pop back up instantly, the float itself is compromised and must be replaced alongside this kit.
3. Check for Vacuum Leaks at the Throttle Shafts
While this minor kit solves gasket and needle/seat issues, it cannot fix worn-out throttle shaft bushings. Before re-installing your refreshed Zenith 32NDIX, wiggle the throttle shafts. If there is significant lateral movement, the carburetor will draw in "unmetered air," making it nearly impossible to achieve a steady idle regardless of how clean the internals are. If your shafts are tight, ensure you use a light touch when tightening the base nuts. Over-torquing the base gaskets can warp the carburetor flange, leading to permanent vacuum leaks. Always use a synchronized tool (Uni-Syn or similar) once the carburetors are back on the car to ensure both barrels are pulling the exact same amount of air at idle.
