        OVERVIEW

When it comes to the final details of a classic Volkswagen restoration or a custom dune buggy build, nothing ruins the aesthetic faster than rusty, mismatched, or rounded-off hardware. These EMPI Chrome Lug Bolts are engineered specifically for the air-cooled enthusiast who demands both security and style. Featuring a brilliant triple-chrome plated finish, these bolts provide a high-luster shine that complements everything from polished EMPI 8-spoke wheels to classic Riviera or BRM styles. Beyond the looks, these bolts are manufactured from high-tensile strength steel to ensure that your wheels stay exactly where they belong, whether you are cruising the local boulevard or navigating a technical trail in a woods buggy. The 60-degree taper (acorn seat) is the industry standard for the vast majority of aftermarket aluminum wheels, providing a superior clamping force and centered fitment that prevents vibration and ensures a smooth ride.

Choosing the right lug hardware is a critical safety decision that many builders overlook. These 12mm bolts are designed for the 4-lug patterns found on later-model Type 1 and Type 3 Volkswagens, as well as many custom disc brake conversions. Because they are sold in a convenient 5-pack, you have exactly what you need for a single wheel with a spare, or enough to outfit a standard 4-lug hub with an extra bolt for your tool kit. The precision-machined threads ensure a smooth installation into your drums or rotors, reducing the risk of cross-threading which is a common headache for VW owners. When you invest in a set of quality wheels, you owe it to your vehicle to secure them with hardware that matches that level of quality. These lug bolts are the definitive choice for any air-cooled project looking for that professional, show-ready finish without sacrificing mechanical integrity.

        FITMENT

These 12mm 60-degree taper lug bolts are designed for Volkswagen vehicles utilizing a 4x130mm bolt pattern or custom applications requiring 12mm x 1.5 threads. Standard fitment includes:

        PRO TIPS

        1. Always Match the Seat Profile to Your Wheels

One of the most common mistakes in the VW world is mixing seat types. Original Equipment (OEM) Volkswagen steel wheels use a Ball Seat (rounded), while most aftermarket aluminum wheels like EMPI, Fuchs replicas, or Centerlines use a 60-Degree Taper Seat (angled). Never use these tapered bolts on a factory steel wheel, as they will not seat correctly, leading to loosened hardware or damaged wheel mounting holes. Always visually inspect the lug pocket of your wheel before installation to ensure a perfect 60-degree match for maximum safety.

        2. Verify Thread Engagement and Clearance

When installing new wheels and bolts, it is vital to check for "bottoming out" or interference. After hand-tightening the bolts, rotate the wheel slowly by hand before lowering the vehicle. If the bolt is too long, it can pass through the hub and strike the internal brake components, such as the brake shoes or the emergency brake mechanism inside the rear drums. Conversely, you must ensure you have at least 6 to 8 full turns of thread engagement. If you have less than that, your bolts are too short for that specific wheel thickness and could strip under load.

        3. Hand Start and Torque to Specification

Never, under any circumstances, use an impact wrench to start your lug bolts. The chrome finish can be easily chipped, and the 12mm threads on a VW hub are susceptible to cross-threading if the bolt isn''t perfectly aligned. Start every bolt by hand until it is finger-tight. Once the vehicle is on the ground, use a calibrated torque wrench to tighten the bolts in a "star pattern" to 70-80 foot-pounds. Using a thin-wall 17mm socket with a layer of electrical tape around the outside will help protect the chrome finish of your new bolts and the finish of your wheels during the tightening process.
