RELIABLE BRAKING STARTS WITH A QUALITY RESERVOIR
When it comes to maintaining the safety and performance of your classic 1971-1972 Volkswagen Type 2 Bus, the braking system should always be your top priority. Over decades of service, the original plastic brake fluid reservoir is subjected to extreme temperature fluctuations and the corrosive nature of brake fluid itself. This leads to the plastic becoming yellowed, brittle, and prone to hairline fractures that can cause catastrophic fluid loss or air ingestion. Replacing your aging unit with this EMPI original-design reservoir ensures that your hydraulic system remains sealed and pressurized, providing the peace of mind you need whether you''re cruising down the coast or navigating city traffic. This isn''t just a cosmetic upgrade; it''s a vital safety component for any serious air-cooled enthusiast.
This high-quality reproduction part is engineered to meet the exacting standards of the original equipment, featuring the correct mounting points and fluid capacity for the unique two-year window of 1971 to 1972. Unlike generic universal reservoirs that require "creative" plumbing, this unit integrates seamlessly into your Bus''s specific configuration, maintaining the vintage aesthetic while offering modern material durability. The translucent body allows for quick visual inspections of your fluid levels without removing the cap, which is essential for identifying potential leaks in the wheel cylinders or master cylinder before they become a major problem. Don''t compromise on your restoration or your safety; choose a part that reflects the quality and heritage of your VW build.

PRO TIPS FROM THE APPLETREE SPECIALISTS
Tip 1: Replace Your Soft Lines and Grommets Simultaneously
Whenever you are replacing the brake fluid reservoir, it is the absolute best time to replace the master cylinder grommets and the blue supply hoses. Over time, the rubber grommets at the master cylinder harden and the supply hoses can become porous. Reusing old, stiff hoses on a brand-new plastic nipple is the leading cause of "mystery leaks" and can even snap the nipple off your new reservoir if the hose isn''t flexible enough to accommodate engine or chassis vibration. Always use genuine German-style blue brake hose for a factory-perfect, leak-free seal.
Tip 2: Choosing the Correct Brake Fluid
For these specific years, we highly recommend using a high-quality DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid. While DOT 4 has a higher boiling point, both are glycol-based and compatible with your system''s seals. However, you should strictly avoid DOT 5 silicone-based brake fluid unless you are performing a 100% complete system overhaul with all-new lines and seals. Mixing even a small amount of glycol-based fluid with silicone-based fluid will cause a chemical reaction that creates a sludge-like consistency, eventually leading to total brake failure and seal swelling.
Tip 3: Master the Bleeding Process
After installing your new reservoir, you must ensure that no air is trapped in the supply line leading down to the master cylinder. Before you start bleeding the wheel cylinders, gravity-bleed the supply line by letting fluid flow from the reservoir into the hose until it reaches the master cylinder connection. Once the system is closed, always follow the "furthest-to-closest" rule: start bleeding at the passenger rear wheel, followed by the driver rear, then the passenger front, and finally the driver front. This ensures all air is pushed out of the longest lines first for a rock-solid pedal feel.
