OVERVIEW
When it comes to maintaining the heart of your vintage air-cooled Volkswagen, the NGK B5HS Spark Plug stands as the industry standard for reliability and performance. Precision-engineered to handle the unique thermal demands of the VW flat-four engine, this spark plug features a 1/2-inch short reach design that is specifically compatible with stock cylinder heads. At Appletree Automotive, we understand that a consistent spark is the difference between a smooth-idling cruiser and a frustrating day in the garage. These NGK plugs utilize a high-grade alumina silicate ceramic insulator that provides superior insulation at high temperatures, ensuring that the electrical charge reaches the electrode without leakage, even under the intense heat of a summer desert drive in your Beetle or Bus.
The NGK B5HS is categorized as a "hotter" plug within the NGK heat range scale. In the world of air-cooled engines, selecting the correct heat range is vital for preventing carbon fouling and ensuring complete combustion. A "5" heat range is ideal for stock 1200cc, 1300cc, 1500cc, and 1600cc engines that see regular street use or frequent stop-and-go traffic. By maintaining a higher internal temperature, the B5HS effectively burns off carbon deposits that can accumulate during low-speed idling, keeping your ignition system crisp and your fuel economy optimized. The trivalent metal plating offers superior anti-corrosion and anti-seizing properties, making these plugs the professional''s choice for Volkswagens, dune buggies, and woods buggies alike.
FITMENT
The NGK B5HS is designed for air-cooled Volkswagen engines equipped with short-reach (1/2-inch) spark plug holes. Please verify your cylinder head requirements before ordering, as some aftermarket or late-model performance heads may require long-reach plugs. This plug is the standard fitment for:
- VW Beetle: 1954 - 1974 (1200cc, 1300cc, 1500cc, and 1600cc engines)
- VW Super Beetle: 1971 - 1974 (Non-fuel injected models)
- VW Bus / Type 2: 1954 - 1971 (Up to 1600cc Dual Port)
- VW Karmann Ghia: 1956 - 1974
- VW Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback): 1962 - 1973
- VW Thing / Type 181: 1973 - 1974
- Custom Applications: Ideal for Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, and Trikes utilizing stock VW upright or pancake engines.

PRO TIPS
1. Always Check Your Gap Before Installation
Even though NGK spark plugs come pre-gapped from the factory, they can occasionally be bumped during shipping, closing the gap or widening it beyond spec. For a standard air-cooled VW with a points-and-condenser ignition system, we recommend a gap of .024 to .028 inches. If you have upgraded to a high-output electronic ignition, such as a Pertronix or Magnaspark system, you may want to open that gap slightly to .030 or .032 inches to take advantage of the stronger spark. Use a dedicated wire-style gapping tool to avoid damaging the center electrode or the ceramic insulator during adjustment.
2. Use Anti-Seize and Proper Torque in Aluminum Heads
Since your VW engine utilizes aluminum cylinder heads, it is absolutely critical to prevent the steel threads of the spark plug from galling or seizing into the head. Apply a very small amount of copper-based anti-seize to the threads, being careful not to get any on the electrode itself. When installing, always start the plugs by hand to ensure they aren''t cross-threading. Once finger-tight, use a torque wrench to tighten them to 14 to 22 lb-ft. Over-tightening can strip the soft aluminum threads, leading to a costly "Time-Sert" or "Helicoil" repair, while under-tightening can lead to compression leaks and poor heat dissipation.
3. Reading the Color of Your B5HS Plugs
The B5HS is an excellent tool for diagnosing your engine''s health. Because it is a "hotter" plug, it should stay very clean in a healthy engine. After a few hundred miles of driving, pull a plug and inspect the ceramic tip. A healthy engine will show a light tan or "coffee with cream" color. If the plug is stark white or blistered, your engine is likely running too lean or the timing is too far advanced, which can lead to overheating. If the plug is covered in black, dry soot, your carburetor is likely set too rich. If it is wet and oily, you may have worn piston rings or valve guides. Monitoring your
