OVERVIEW
When you''re pushing your air-cooled Volkswagen to the limit, whether it''s a high-revving 2165cc stroker in a weekend street car or a rugged 1600cc dual-port in a sand rail, precision engine monitoring isn''t just a luxuryit''s a necessity. The AutoMeter Z-Series 8000 RPM Tachometer (ATM2698) is the gold standard for enthusiasts who demand a "stealth" factory look combined with race-grade accuracy. Featuring a crisp black face, white digits, and a slim black bezel, this 2-1/16 inch gauge blends seamlessly into any VW dashboard or three-gauge console. Unlike flashy chrome gauges that can look out of place in a vintage interior, the Z-Series offers a professional, understated aesthetic that prioritizes readability and performance. Its air-core electric movement provides the quick response and dampening required to keep up with rapid RPM changes, ensuring you never miss a shift or accidentally over-rev your expensive valvetrain.
This tachometer is engineered for maximum versatility, making it the perfect companion for a wide range of Volkswagen powerplants. It is fully compatible with 4, 6, and 8-cylinder engines, which means it works perfectly with your flat-four VW engine regardless of your ignition setup. Whether you are running a traditional points-and-condenser distributor, a Pertronix Ignitor conversion, or a high-output capacitive discharge system like an MSD box, the ATM2698 is designed to pick up a clean signal and deliver rock-solid readings. The perimeter incandescent lighting ensures that your engine vitals are clearly visible during night cruises without being distracting. When you choose AutoMeter, you are investing in a piece of equipment that has been proven on the track and the street for decades, providing the peace of mind that your air-cooled investment is being monitored by the best in the business.

PRO TIPS
1. Calibrate for the Air-Cooled Flat-Four
Out of the box, most AutoMeter tachometers are factory-set for an 8-cylinder engine. Before you finalize your installation in a Volkswagen, you must calibrate the gauge for a 4-cylinder signal. On the back of the ATM2698, you will typically find two brown wire loops or a set of dip switches. For a standard VW 4-cylinder engine, you will need to cut both of the calibration wire loops (or set the switches according to the included diagram). If you forget this step, your tachometer will display exactly half of your actual engine RPM, which could lead to disastrous results if you try to tune your idle or shift points based on the incorrect reading.
2. Choosing the Correct Signal Source
Wiring the signal lead (usually the green wire) is the most critical part of the installation. If you are using a standard Bosch Blue coil or a Pertronix setup, connect the green wire directly to the negative (-) terminal of the ignition coil. However, if you have upgraded your VW to a CDI ignition box (like an MSD 6AL), NEVER connect the tachometer wire to the coil. High-output ignition boxes can send several hundred volts to the coil, which will instantly fry the internal circuitry of your new tachometer. Instead, use the dedicated "Tach Output" port located on the side of the ignition box to ensure a safe, clean 12V square-wave signal.
3. Optimizing Night Visibility and Wiring
To get the best visual experience, wire the tachometer''s lighting circuit into your factory VW headlight switch. This allows the gauge to dim and brighten along with your speedometer. Because air-cooled VWs can sometimes suffer from "noisy" electrical systems due to aging generators or alternators, we recommend using a dedicated ground for the gauge rather than daisy-chaining it to other accessories. Running a clean ground wire directly to the chassis or a terminal block will prevent the needle from jumping or fluttering when you turn on your headlights or wipers, ensuring the smooth, precise needle movement AutoMeter is famous for.
