OVERVIEW
When you''re pushing a high-performance air-cooled flat-four through the dunes or down the drag strip, your oil pressure is the only thing standing between a trophy and a seized engine case. The AutoMeter 2-5/8 inch Ultra-Nite Oil Pressure Gauge (ATM4541) is engineered for the serious Volkswagen enthusiast who demands absolute precision and legendary reliability. Unlike standard electronic gauges that can suffer from signal interference or electrical lag, this mechanical masterpiece provides a direct, real-time reading of your engine''s lifeblood. The Ultra-Nite series is specifically designed for superior visibility in low-light conditions, featuring a high-contrast white face and bold black numbering that remains highly legible even when the sun goes down and the desert air cools. This isn''t just a gauge; it''s a critical piece of insurance for your expensive stroker motor or vintage restoration.
The larger 2-5/8 inch diameter is a game-changer for custom VW dashes, rail buggies, and Baja Bugs. While the industry-standard 2-1/16 inch gauges can be difficult to read at a glance during high-vibration off-road maneuvers, this oversized display ensures you can monitor your PSI without taking your eyes off the trail for more than a split second. The mechanical bourdon tube movement is world-renowned for its durability, capable of withstanding the constant rhythmic thrum and harsh harmonics of a Volkswagen air-cooled engine. Whether you are cruising in a split-window bus or launching a sand rail, the ATM4541 offers the professional-grade monitoring that has made AutoMeter the top choice for racers and builders for decades. At Appletree Auto, we know that ''''close enough'''' isn''t good enough for your oil pressure, and this gauge delivers the exact data you need to keep your air-cooled investment running cool and properly lubricated.
FITMENT
This universal mechanical gauge is a favorite for custom air-cooled Volkswagen applications. While it can be adapted to almost any vehicle, it is most commonly installed in the following:
- Volkswagen Beetle: All years (Standard and Super Beetle) with custom dash panels or under-dash pods.
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1956-1974 models looking for a vintage racing aesthetic.
- Volkswagen Type 2 Bus: 1950-1979 (Split Window and Bay Window) models, especially those with performance engine upgrades.
- Volkswagen Type 3: Notchback, Squareback, and Fastback models.
- Volkswagen Thing (Type 181): Perfect for rugged, open-cabin monitoring.
- Dune Buggies & Sand Rails: Ideal for Manx-style bodies and tube chassis rails where visibility is paramount.
- Baja Bugs: Designed to handle the high-vibration environment of off-road racing.

PRO TIPS
1. Upgrade to Copper Line Kits
Most mechanical gauges come with a basic nylon tubing kit. For an air-cooled VW, we strongly recommend upgrading to a copper line kit. The heat generated by the cylinder heads and the proximity of the oil pressure sender to the exhaust system can easily melt nylon lines, leading to a massive oil leak and potential engine fire. A copper line provides the heat resistance and durability needed for the harsh environment of a Volkswagen engine bay. Always use a small coil (vibration loop) in the copper line near the engine to prevent the metal from fatiguing and cracking due to engine movement.
2. Proper Sender Location and Adapters
When installing this gauge on a VW Type 1 engine, you will usually mount the sending line at the stock oil pressure switch location (next to the distributor). Do not simply remove your stock oil light switch; instead, use a ''''T-Adapter'''' or a remote oil block. This allows you to keep your factory ''''idiot light'''' for immediate low-pressure warnings while using the AutoMeter gauge for precise monitoring. If you are running an external oil cooler or a full-flow system, consider tapping into the oil pump cover or the external filter head for the most accurate pressure readings after the oil has been cooled.
3. Dash Clearance and Mounting
Keep in mind that this is a 2-5/8 inch gauge, which is significantly larger than the standard 2-1/16 inch (52mm) gauges found in most VW pods. Before cutting your dashboard, ensure you have enough depth behind the panel for the mechanical fitting and the light socket. Because this is a mechanical gauge, you are running a pressurized oil line into the cabin. Ensure the line passes through the firewall using a high-quality rubber grommet to prevent the sharp edges of the metal from cutting the line over time. Secure the line every 12 inches to prevent it from rattling or chafing against other components under the dash.
